I did a search first & did not find an answer.

    Win 98SE. IE\OE 5.01.

What's happening is the computer will not connect to the Internet directly through the IE Icon. It gives the message that "No connection to the Internet is Currently Available." However, it will connect through Outlook Express, & if you connect through Outlook Express first, then click on the IE icon, it will connect to the Internet that way. This seems very strange to me.

We've done all the usual stuff. IE repair. Did the Scandisk & defrag stuff. Removed the dial up account & re-did it, making sure all of the information was in there & correct. Still a no go on direct IE connect.

If anyone can give me a fix for this, I'd sure appreciate it.

    Deloris,

I don't want to sound too simplistic but have you gone into the Tools /Options in both IE and OE and checked out which program is running as the default program.

It could just be that your system is currently set up with OE as the default.

Just a thought...hope for you it is that simple.

    roy66,

You know, when we were looking at all that stuff, I did see them both set to never dial a connection, but she assured me that it had always been that way. OE is the one she "can" connect with, then connects to IE from there once connected through OE. I had her to go into IE too & all of it's settings are the same as OE.

She only has the one ISP, so it would have to dial that one, or none at all, and as I recall, both OE & IE are set to dial that ISP as the default connection. Neither IE nor OE is set as a default dialer, if I remember correctly.

I shall mention this to her anyway & see if she can find where that might be.

I don't see how having it set to never dial a connection would allow a connection with one, but not with the other, I will nevertheless tell her this.

It may be a few hours before I get back with an answer.

Thanks for the suggestion, even if it is simplistic. Sometimes simplistic, something you'd never think of, is the answer. :) We will see.

Deloris--As you probably know, when you have IE set to "never dial a connection" you can open the browser but it will not initiate a connection to the ISP. You then have to open the connection to the browser in a separate step.

    Welshjim,

That's what I thought! That is why I questioned her about it when I saw it, and she swore it had always been like that, but I don't think it was myself. I helped her set it up & I think I recall checkmarking the one that says dial my default connection, however I let it ride for now.

I have mine set to dial my default connection.

I have made some screen shots of my Internet Options settings & am going to send them to her via e-mail. She can check hers against mine & see what might be amiss. We both have the same ISP, so the only difference that counts, shoud be the account name, password, & e-mail address. The rest should be the same.

I will try that for now. Her husband sleeps during the day & works nights & the computer is in the Bed Room, so it may be awhile before I know anything.

Thanks for confirming one thing that I had suspicions about.

    Hi everyone,

I sent my daughter the screen shots several days ago & I haven't heard a word back from her. I guess I am going to have to get on her case, :D & make her tell me what she found different, if anything & if it got fixed or not, & if so what she had to change to fix it.

Deloris--Just possible that in the past your daughter may have started her connection to the Internet by clicking the icon for the ISP rather than the one for IE. Clicking the ISP's icon will initiate both IE and the connection to the Internet even if "Never dial a connection" is checked.

    Welshjim,

You have a point there, but everytime I've ever seen her click for a connection to the Internet, it's been the IE Icon, and it just recently stopped working. It is possible, however, that she could have done that at one time by accident & it kind of re-set things maybe, or will it do that?

I don't know if clicking the ISP connection icon would re-set things or not, since I have never used it. Do you know if it will, or not? I don't want to click mine to experiment, because I don't want to have to straighten it out if it does re-set it. :D

    Welshjim,

    How true, how true. :D

She says it isn't fixed yet & that it got a lot worse. Stopped responding with internal error messages every few seconds. Says she got desperate & downloaded IE6, & still can't use the IE icon, but that everything else seems to be working for now at least. If it got that bad, I am surprised she was able to download IE 6 at all.

I wrote back & asked if she even bothered to compare her settings with mine before she got desperate & if she had, why didn't she just install the complete IE 5.5 SP2 that was on a disk of utilities that I had burned for her. To look & see what she already has before she gets "desperate."

Kids, ya gotta love em! Well, sometimes anyway. :D

Well, I guess my girl is happy with how it's working now, even though she still can't use the IE icon. She hasn't hollered help again yet. :D

Oh well, as long as she's happy, I guess. :)
