    Greetings,

Right now my dialup modem is working without a com port visible, does this resemble the calm before the storm?
(When I install drivers on reboot, I am not prompted to direct toward a com port.
BTW, the modem is currently on IRQ 0. I noticed that by default com 1 is set to IRQ 4.)

Do the IRQ for the Com port need syncronizing during modem configuration or is the modem assigned a different Com port and IRQ #?

I have also read that 98se will reinstall without deleting data. Will previously installed programs continue to work or does something need to be reinstalled?

I appologize for the earlier version of this post and any vague posts in the future. I will try and keep it KISS!

Your dial up modem (PCI card?) is using a virtual port, or one that does not exist as hardware attached to your motherboard. COM1 is a hardware port, and does typically get assigned IRQ4.

Your installed programs should work after an overlay install of windows.

    No more problems.

:D Thanks for chiming in. Your right about the reinstall. All programs (all that I have run anyway) are problem free and even the modem got up and running like it should. I have terrible connection speeds limits...but that's out my hands and subject to more research around the web before I come running.

:D If only I knew about this reinstalling over a busted OS earlier...to think of the hours of reistalling os's and programs I coulda saved

Now, I just have to decide if I want to try and setup a better dual boot than my current Ubuntu on a slow 20g and 98se on a 80g Sata. I do have an older version of Ghost which seems pretty straight forward, but I have now room to give it a go until I repartition the disk into smaller sizes. I really like this idea about multipartitioning with separate OS's ie. 1 for surfing, another for gaming, 1 with ghost of new OS, etc.

I still have an exclamation over IRQ 4 in device manager>computer>properties.

Since the reinstall, the modem configured naturally with COM1 IRQ4.

But the modem is working --I be it a very pathetic speeds-- and so consider this thread closed. ;)

    Thanks a lot.
