    Hi

Here is the problem guys, hope you can help.

It's a new PC, just over a month hold. Everything fine, no problems until this morning.

Switch on power, there is a small amount of activity on the CD and DVD drives , then the power and hard drive lights stay on and nothing else happens. It just sits there with the orange and green lights staring at me. Also, the monitor seems to be in standby mode, as the power light flashes.

Haven't done anything to it, no new programmes hardware or changes and everything seemed to power down last night fine. So I am left at the starting gate with no idea of how to get further. Of course, it's the weekend and the vendor's technical support is closed until Mnday, so thought I would drop in here in the meantime and many people have been very helpful in the past.

It's a Mesh Matrix AMD Athlon...80 gig Hard drive

Any offers while I wait for Monday.

    Hi Ron

    Don't sound so good.

But try this! Some new motherboards maintain 3 volts thru the powercord to allow remote poweron etc.

Completely unplug from power for at least 1 minute. Then plug back in and try.

The monitor will normally show as you said it it has power but computer is off.

    Try this, get back!

    Hi Mike,

Tried your idea, but no luck. Just the same. As I say, the monitor is not even powering up, the little power light will just flash on and off as if on standby. The Hard disk light on the front stays on, as does the power light. Have tried leaving it for five minutes, but it doesn't want to know. As you say, it doesn' t sound good!!!

Tried unplugging all the USB peripherals, same story. Its as if its lost all boot up info and machine doesn't know how to do it. Have not done a thing to it and it worked fine yesterday but as we all know from experience, that doesn't mean a thing.

Will keep checking back here on the old machine in casr anyone has any ideas and try the Help- line on Monday. Thanks for your help so far. Will let you know how I get on.

    Regards
    Ron:(

Only me thinking about this problem
......I know that XP will go into some sort of power down/sleep mode when there has been no activity for a set time, is there any way it has gone to sleep and has forgotten how to wake up.

    Only a thought.

    Remotely possible!

But I beleive you have a hardware problem.

Do you hear any beeps when the lights come on?

Do you hear the fans come on?

More importantly do you hear the HD spin up click purr and then go silent?

If none of these I would remove case unplug and reseat all interface cards and memory.

If that don't work. Get out a good book till Monday.

    Hi Mike,

I fear the worst for the Hard drive.

On power up., there are no beeps, just a couple of seconds of purring HD activity and then...nothing. As I said before the HD orange activity light stays on as does the green power light, The fan is working too. Interesting, if unpug the monitor cable from the back of the tower, then power up, the monitor is able to pwer up too with the screen telling me that there is no input. If I power up with the monitor plugged in as normal, it seems to go into sleep mode, as if the whole system is in sleep mode.

Surely the HD cannot be totally gone.? It's only just only a month old, therefore under warranty. I hand't really started using it in ernest for video editing etc.

That's the state of play at moment. Thankfully, I still have my old machine running.

    Will keep you informed

The reverse of what you think is more likely.

The fact that you hear the HD purr actually means it is likely OK!

The computer would try to boot, you would see the screens and all even if the HD was completely disconnected. It would end up telling you it could not find the HD. But you would see things on the screen.

    So my diag!

First - bad video card or not seated properly
Second - processor not seated or bad
    Tied for second - motherboard

Let me know what they find!

    Good Morning,

Spoke to Mesh Computers this morning, explained the symptoms and as far as the guy on the other end can determine from my explanation, it's a motherboard problem. What exactly, we won't know. They are sending me documentation and it is going back to base. So could be awhile before the issue is resolved, but at least it's started the recovery trail. Hopefully, it won't be too long before I am up and running again.

Will post a message in due course.

Meantime thanks to all, especially Mike, for taking the time and trouble to offer advice.

    Regards from Scotland

    OK Ron

Specifically remind them that you have important data on the HD and to not lose it.

I am positive from all we covered it is not the HD.
