    Hi
As I write this I am on my dads computer. Luckily for him I havent messed up his system yet. Today I installed a new cooling fan for my CPU. While doing this I decided to swop my RAM with my sons computers RAM as they should have been switched anyway to match the respective 333 and 266 Mhz systems. (unbranded memory problem - dont ask).
Anyway neither mine or my sons computer now work. They both dont boot up and neither monitors switch on. I have swapped back the memory to no avail. Ive tried different memory slots also. My sons machine is switched on and the cd trays eject and the hard drive is spinning. However the power fan and chassis fan on my computer no longer work, and on one boot attempt I got a series of long tones when switching on (ASUS A7V333). I think Ive fried both motherboards, but before I buy new ones has anyone any ideas please? I have tried the suspect RAM in my dads computer and the RAM works.
    thanks
    Steve

Need to triple check all wiring connection. Its very easy to bump and unplug the hard drive or some other device.

To add, make sure that the video card is fully seated. That card if bumped can back one end out of the slot and cause what you are seeing.

    May help?:

I've just had a day or so trying to install ram. Was just about to give up when I found they weren't quite seated properly. (Can give all sorts of strange errors).

    Press firmly on both ends.

After trips to many sites to ensure they were compatible, I'm not going take these babies back out in a hurry!

Thanks for the replies, but I spent 3 hours on a sunday making sure that everything was seated properly and other basic things. The reason I changed the cooling fan was that the CPU was running a little hot and after I rebooted with the new fan I got the bios screen telling me to check the CPU speed. What I now think is that the athlon CPU is fried, cos my sons computer also stopped working when I put the processor in his to check it. So I think I'll get the CPU checked out. It may have blown both motherboards! Could this be the problem?

If both boards are now not responding, have you tried using the "reset the CMOS" jumper?
(Note: if you do try it make sure the power is disconnected.)

PS: I have come across something similar...and yes, do not use that CPU on any other motherboard unless you are sure it is not causing any damage.

If you want help resolving these issues, you need to spell out exactly what you did - "come clean" so to speak. You started out saying you installed a new cooling fan in one computer and switched the memory between two, yet your last post references changing a processor.

I seriously doubt that you have fried anything but you are wasting everybody's time, including your own, when you only tell part of the story. Sure, you did some dumb things - we all do, but lets spell it out and get on with getting this resolved. Quit beating around the bush.

I think I have a pretty good idea of whats going on by reading between the lines but you are going to get those machines back up and running much faster if you present all of the facts -

    ;)

too late. £150 and both computers are working again. 2 new motherboards (one under warranty), and 2 new processors. The original processor in my computer started smoking so that was a bit of a clue it was buggered!

Congratulations - That's certainly one sure way to fix it. Unfortunately, you have one remaining problem located between the chair and the keyboard.

    OUCH!

That "similar" situation I mentioned was 3 fried motherboards. Luckily you didn't take it on a tour of the neighbourhood.

yeah matt not ever happened before, unfortunately testing components is beyond me so I guess next time my cpu starts to run hot I'll be a bit more careful.
