Reseat the Processor chip, and make sure the CPU fan is spinning. Reseat the RAM stick(s) and Graphics card. Check and also reseat the power cable from the PSU to the motherboard.

You may have lost the 12v CPU voltage. Check the 12v CPU power (square power socket connected to the motherboard) is seated, probably in the vicinity of the CPU.

Maybe a faulty PSU? Source another to test/exchange.

    Simplify and Test:

    mindbug,

I assume you built this; if not, take it to the builder.

If it's your build, remove or disconnect everything in/from case except mobo, cpu-heatsink-fan, one memory stick, video card, monitor, keyboard, psu, and floppy drive with dos disk; then try to boot, listening for beeps. If it boots and you get text on the screen, you're ok. If not, you can try substitution for what's there (e.g. video card, psu), but it sure sounds like it's a dead cpu or mobo then.

no response what so ever from the pc. It's a fairly old pc. It is a duron 1000mhz and I can't find a spare cpu for it to test so I can't for sure determine that the cpu is damaged or the mb. It's a msi motherboard and it's diagnostic leds tells me that the cpu is damaged or not correct installed

If it's important to get the machine running:

    mindbug,

If it's important to get the machine running, I think a new motherboard and cpu is the way I'd go, and since you said it's an old machine I'd get a new power supply if the case takes a standard psu.

You might want to order a psu first to see if that's the problem (unlikely, IMO), since you probably should have it anyway; I wouldn't put a new mobo in with an old psu - just asking for trouble.

I don't think I'd put a new cpu in the system without a new mobo for the same reason.

The whole fix shouldn't cost more than $200, and probably less.

I'd agree with sparrow's first post and would add a couple of things. Clear and reset CMOS, pull the video card and memory - clean the contacts with a pencil eraser and alcohol then reseat them, check all cabling and make sure your cpu fan connector is on the right header (some MoBo's have a lock out).

    ;)

Try visiting tigerdirect.com, they have motherboard bundles that come with the processor starting at like $40 for a relatively good (better than yours :D ) to $300 (excellent). You can also buy a mobo and processor separate (check for compatibility before you order first though). I have started loving this web page after I was having problems with my computer and ending up buying new parts.

    Good luck,
    Jason
