Try opening the player, going to Tools, Options, Devices. When the window fills, highlight Speakers and click the Properties button. Select Default DirectSound Device in the dropdown.

Have you tried installing WMP 9? Either installing that or reinstalling WMP 8 may replace missing files or codecs. Check your Event Viewer as well.

When you play these videos that have no sound, is the volume control still functional in the lower right of the player, or is it disabled like it would be with a video that actually contained no sound?

Sorry for the misunderstanding. I wrote real media player, I did not meant Real(networks) but WMP. I have V9 (2980). The volume slider is functional although not responding. I use Creative Audigy Platinum for sound connected to 5.1 speakers.

I do not believe this is a Media Player problem.

It appears to be either a Driver problem or a possible IRQ conflict.

The IRQ problem may be the cause of the driver problem.

Do you have an Internal Modem ?

    Yes. Several times.

When I had conflicts between and Internal Modem and a much less fussy Sound Blaster16 card in both Win98 and Win98 SE.

And from what I see and read that situation has not changed with XP.

For starters, open WMP and go to Tools, Options, Network tab.
Be sure all 4 protocols are checked.

Try both "browser" and "none" for the proxy settings at bottom.

Check your firewall log after trying to use the player to be sure nothing has been blocked.

Try, temporarily, going to the File Types tab in the player Options and selecting all formats. You can always change these to other players later if you choose.

    Details:
TCP non-syn/non-ack packet on invalid connection. Packet has been dropped
    Source IP address: 194.109.127.90
    Destination IP address: peter-i1(194.109.223.254)
    TCP Source Port: http(80)
    TCP Destination Port: 8063
    TCP Message Flags: 0x00000014

I have set the proxies on autodetect and th associated all file types to WMP.
The above is from my firewall. I think it is from after I started a link to a mediasource in my browser.

I'm a little confused. At one point above you say that you do have sound when you switch to WMP9. So when exactly do you not have sound? And switching to WMP9 from what?

Just for kicks, go to Run and type: dxdiag
Click OK and perform all the sound tests available there. Also check in the windows at the bottom to see if any file peoblems are noted.

    Please, don't be.
When you push the media button in IE you get this media frame on the left side. Starting a video there gives you a little window on the bottom. When playing that video you can switch to the standalone WMP through the button mediaoptions. Only then I get sound.
Dxdiag showed some errors. Not in the sound section but in the Network/Directplay.
When I start test Directplay, dxdiag crashes.
    Getting warmer, I think.
It is a pitty I cannot attach the dxdiag.txt.
I will however install the latest over my present 8.1, see what happens.

I have DX 9 installed now. Dxdiag showed no errors anymore.
But, still no sound with my video in the buit-in media window.
It seems to become a real challenge to find the answer.

At least one thing was fixed!

Try updating codecs (though this seems unlikely, since you have sound).

Open Device Manager and click the plus sign next to "Sound, Video, and game controllers ". Right-click Audio Codecs and choose Update. Put in your XP CD and let it try to update automatically. Then go through the process again, only choose "Install from a specific location ". In the following window, specify D:\i386\ as a location for it to search (if D: is your CD).

Any warnings in the Sound section (yellow exclamation points) of Device Manager?

PS. Do you have SP1 installed? Do you have the CD with the entire Windows installation on it, or is it a recovery disk of some sort?

    I use a selfcomposed XP-cd with sp1 integrated.
I have yellow exclamation marks on 3 Pinnacle devices in the sound section. I have disabled them. Could not update audiocodecs drivers because the system did not find any better than the ones installed on my XP cdrom.

What Pinnacle devices do you have and do you use them any more?

This may seem extreme if you have never done it before, but if it were me, I'd try a repair installation of XP. How do you feel about trying that? It is really painless.

(There is no 100% guarantee that even this will solve the problem, of course. But I look at these repairs sort of like taking a shower ;) .)

Did you install XP from your new CD, or did you install SP1 to your system?

    Do you use AdAware?

Have you tried opening Media Player, selecting tools/options/file types, select all and hit apply.

If any box in that window is dark or not checked in means that that file type has been asigned to some other player.

Some other player may have taken things away from Media Player. I know Real Player deffintely will if allowed to.

Also If by chance Real Players has been installed and removed there is still need to go to WMP and re-associated the files.

All file types in WMP were assigned to WMP already without any indication of an error.
    I use AdAware 6.
The Pinnacle devices that were installed came accidently during install of Pinnacle Studio 8. They are not only disabled but also deinstalled now. No change.
I installed XP from an original cd. Later I added sp1 from the web.
I am not sure about performing a repair install. I experienced some unforseen changes in the past. Someting that has put me off trying that again. How do you think about that?

I forgot to mention that it is definif not a IRQ problem.
I use DSL modem over ISDN (usb).

It may not be. But at the same time I personally would not rule it out altogether.

If by some chance there exists either an onbaord Modem that is not disabled or a PCI Modem is still plugged in even if it is disabled.

That is a big problem with Windows ( any version ). Sometimes problems do exist that there may be no indication of.

Also if by chance Real Player is installed and loaded in the background that may also mess up Media Player.

These are just things that I have run into but may not be in your case.

I have a disabled onboard modem on my Asus P4B266 MB.
Real player does not start up with windows. I have a (emergency) usb modem that is usually not on.
