The sound icon has a red "X" on it and no sound can be played. When hovering the cursor over it we get the message "No Audio Output Device is Installed." We have previously gotten sound, but it no longer works. Is there a way to repair this? Thank you for your help.

Go to Control Panel/Device Manager and under Audio, click on Speakers and delete it. Reboot and let Windows find it and reinstall it.

Thanks for the reply. I opened the Device Manager, and there is no "Audio" or "Sound." Any other suggestions? Thanks again.

Also, I tried to install Legacy Hardware, Sound and Game Controller, but it indicates Parameter is incorrect and will not install.

In W10 > Device Manager > Audio inputs and outputs > may be where you need carry out MrBill's suggestion.
Right click on Start > Device Manager.

"Audio inputs and outputs" does not appear in the Device Manager.

I'd start by running Windows build in troubleshooter:

To run the troubleshooter, select the Start button, type audio troubleshooter, and then select Find and fix audio playback problems from the list of results and select Next.

For more ideas see: Fix sound problems in Windows 10

Hi Terri95448, Welcome to WindowsBBS. :). Sorry I didn't notice that you are new to the Board. We're shooting blind here as we don't know what your PC is!
If you have the DVD that should have been a new comp - I would run the DVD to reinstall the motherboard drivers.
If you click on the Menu alongside your Profile at the top right of this page > click on Your Account > scroll to Settings > click on Preferences > you will see how you can fill in your comp details > scroll to bottom and SAVE Changes before closing out.
