I formatted and reinstalled xp. Installed all drivers. No audio. Checked device manager and msinfo. All working properly. Went to web site to see if new drivers were available. Found two. Installed them. Still no audio. Also checked volumn control. Nothing muted.

I installed xp then sp1 because my sound drivers wouldn't install without sp1. After installation I installed sp2. Everything runs fine, just no audio. Audio format doesn't matter, nothing is heard. No yellow !'s or red x's found. Don't know where to go now. Help.

Went to Windows Update and found a driver but installation failed. 3 times. Don't know why.

Since you don't sound like you are too far into the process of setting the machine up again, a suggestion.

Format NTFS, load XP, load SP2. Then try setting things up with windows updates as the first priority. Use the SP2 firewall from the beginning.

Even better if you have a CD burner and want a cleaner install would be to create a slipstream XP-SP2 install CD and format then install with that. In either case, no need for SP1 and better if you just skip it.

Sorry but no clue about the specifics of your audio issue.

    Hi Newt,

Not too far into setup....2nd go round. First I formatted NTFS, installed xp. Then tried to install the drivers from cd. Error said it couldn't install until I upgraded to sp1. I installed sp2. Tried to install again. Error message said it couldn't install until I upgraded to sp1. Formatted again. Installed xp. Downloaded and installed sp1 and installed the drivers with no problem. Except for two drivers that an error message said something about their not being endorsed by windows, something to that effect, and would I like to cancel or install anyway. Figuring I needed the drivers I installed anyway. ( Here I was between a rock and a hard place; install the files and take a chance or don't install and take a chance. Either way seemed to be a cross your fingers kind of thing.) I also had a couple of files give the same warning when I installed xp.

For what its worth, I'm using the keyboard and moniter from my HP OEM machine. Worked great when I first got this computer but no audio on reinstall. I can't even guess as to what to try next.

Are you dealing with an OEM machine and some sort of 'special' CDs they furnish to do a system install?

Just the monitor and keyboard that came with the OEM. I have a AMD Athlon(tm) XP 2800+ 2.08 GHz, 480 MB of RAM. Nvidia motherboard, Realtek sound device. It was the sound drivers that wouldn't install without sp1. Once I installed the sound drivers I installed sp2.

Another thing, the speakers are built into the monitor with volumn control on the keyboard. When I first tried to play audio the + - keys on the keyboard wouldn't work. I went to the hp site and downloaded an update for Realtek and my monitor. When I installed these two the + - keys worked but still no audio. Everything appears to be installed properly but no audio.

Microsoft update has an update for Realtek but this file would not install.

    ???????????????????????????

I see the Letters OEM connected to what I believe to be a DIFFERENT motherboard.

    AND SPECIAL HARDWARE.

I will bet on the KEYBOARD as maybe being the problem.

    Another reason I think Keyboard.

I had a Compaq PC brought to me for work.

IT WOULD NOT work with one of my old keybaords. I had to wait till they brought me the Keyboard than goes with it.

    Hi BillyBob

The monitor and keyboard worked well with this computer for the past year. I had no problems of any sort. Audio has been fine until the reinstall. I figure I have a driver problem but locating which driver is giving me a fit. At this point I think I'm gonna go to my motherboard and sound device web sites to see if I can locate other drivers I may need to update. If that doesn't work I'll be stumped unless someone here has other suggestions. Thanks.

Anyone know where I can download digitally signed audio drivers? Realtek doesn't have them.

    Dopey,

You may want to go to the HP website and enter the model number for your pc and check for drivers there. I've got an older HP pc that has a 'goofy' sound card and the only drivers I could find for it were there.
Also as to the 'unsigned' drivers... this means that Microsoft hasn't certified them, shouldn't be a problem as long as you're careful where you get them. :D

Are your speakers "Polk Audio" and are they attached to the monitor from an older HP Computer? If so I think you are going to have to buy a Powered speaker system and plug the Polk Audio speakers into that system. I had the same problem until I bought a Creative SBS 2.1 speaker system at Wal Mart for $20.00. The volumn control on the keyboard I think you will find is not plugged into any thing if you have changed out the case - motherboard-cpu and etc. which is what I did.

    Hope this helps.

    Hi Mr B,

I went to the hp website earlier today and downloaded a driver for the keyboard. After reading your post I went back to see if there was one for the monitor. There was but I still have no audio. I can't figure this thing out, this is a fresh install. Well partial, I only have the bare basics installed; xp, sp2, drivers, firewall, antivirus, isp. No need to go any further until I can get this solved. Thanks.

    Hi Garybeafl,

We posted at the same time. :)

I am using my hp monitor, keyboard and mouse from an hp oem computer on a computer I bought last year. Its a flatscreen monitor with the speakers built inside. The keyboard has the volumn control buttons and also a sleep button for the moniter. Everythings seems to be in order but no audio. Cant hear nothing from nothing.

This monitor and keyboard worked well when I first bought this computer(the new one not the hp). I formatted and reinstalled and now no audio. Thanks.

    a shot in the dark...

    dopey,

I was just re-reading your earlier posts to try and jolt my brain.
Is there possibly a 'mute' button on the keyboard that is being overlooked? Also do you know the make and model number of the soundcard? Everest will help if you are not sure. Maybe we can dig up some info on this card.

    dopey,

Try Everest again... Look under Multimedia in the folder tree and then choose the 'Windows Audio' information and the 'PCI/PnP Audio' sections. If you use the 'Report Wizard' selecting 'custom selection' you can select just those two sections and save it to a text file (might be easier to post). Let's have a look at that.

    dopey,

I think this has come down to motherboard drivers. I didn't notice the nVidia motherboard mentioned in your earlier post, but then the soundcard in showing up as a nVidia unit. If you have a motherboard driver disk try installing those, if not there's nVidia information HERE. Hopefully this will take care of this. :D

    Mr B,

Downloaded the NVMixer, but it wouldn't load because I was missing some drivers so went back to site and downloaded those. The mixer did ok for no audio. I could see the meters jumping as the music played but I still couldn't hear anything.

At this point I was thinking that something had to be muted. Somewhere. I checked everywhere but couldn't find anything. I'm back to square one again.

Does the Nvidia USB 2.0 driver have anything to do with audio? I can't install this driver unless I upgrade to sp1. So the disk says. I have sp2 installed but this must be a pre sp2 disk. Thanks.

    dopey,

I'm not sure what you download  , the link in my previous post was for the Window 'Unified' driver from nVidia.
There was a patch for USB 2.0 in XP sp1, but if you have sp2 installed you should already have it because sp2 is suppose to include sp1.
I guess we need to go back and double check everything... make sure that the speakers in the monitor are connected correctly to your sound card. Then go to the Control Panel and select 'Sounds and Audio Devices' check ALL the settings and make sure nothing is muted and the volume levels are up. Make sure any place that shows an Audio Device, that the correct (or default) sound card is selected. Also check your 'Keyboard' settings in the Control Panel and make sure there is nothing sound related in there.
Another thing you could maybe try a different set of speakers. Maybe you could borrow some if you don't have an extra set lying around.
