Hope this is in the correct forum.
Member of our forum has the following message when trying to open a file or photo files.

    Local disk (F )
The file F:\\ LDC Newsletter Front page master. pub cannot be opened.
Access privligies have not been given. show help.

File permissions have been set so you cannot access the file (read denied).

You may not have permission to open anything where it is located '

These files and photo files are the work ( Author ) of the PC owner.
She has just had a slave drive added. partioned, 'F' is a partition.

The OS is XP Pro.I am operating remotely with PC owner via emails and telephone.
Can you describe how to get to 'take ownership'? and why 'explorer' ?these files are in house.and where will she find 'Menu' in her XP OS.
    Thanks, Spanner

Oops, didn't realize that when I posted. The above "Take Ownership" apparently only works with "Win 7 and Vista ".

Once it's been installed (in Win 7 or Vista), it's available in Windows Explorer. Simply right-click a file or folder and then select "Take Ownership ".

Because Windows Explorer is the file manager for Windows.

The "Right-Click Menu" is available in Windows Explorer.

(To load Windows Explorer in Windows XP click Start > My Computer or press [Winkey][E]).

In Windows Explorer right-click one of drives, one of the folders, one of the files, etc., and what you'll then be looking at is called a "Right-Click Menu ".

However, none of this really matters in this case because the above "Take Ownership" doesn't work with anything older than Windows Vista.

What happens if you copy the file "F:\\ LDC Newsletter Front page master. pub" to another drive (like C:), and then try to open that copy?

Thanks Lads so far but no luck ,she tried the 'Take ownership ' as per Arie post, did the right click on file then Properties, but does not get security tab on the window, she tried the same for drive F to try to get ownership of the whole drive, no luck.
What next please, the whole drive, partitioned as Local Disk F and Local Disk G is of her creation, The Disk G is mainly photo's and she can open those.
    Thanks in anticipation.
PS trying to move file to another drive is not allowed 'Access denied'

To display the Security tab (Windows XP Pro)

    1. In Control Panel, click Appearance and Themes, and then click Folder Options
    2. On the View tab, under Advanced settings, clear Use simple file sharing [Recommended].

Also note that the file system must be NTFS and not FAT32 (that is the case here, otherwise you wouldn't be getting the access error) and the OS needs to be XP Pro. For XP Home you'll have to boot in Safe Mode to get access to the Security tab.

Also see: "Windows cannot access the specified device, path, or file" error when you try to install, update or start a program or file

Thanks Arie, will give the lady the instructions you have posted and I will follow her responses on my XP Pro PC.
You say it must be NTFS but suggest it is/ FAT32. what do we do if you are correct?
Why would these files become unaccessable when she is the Author?

No, I meant that the file system is NTFS, if it would have been FAT32 you wouldn't have received the error msg.

Back with our over 50's forum now, have the ladies Computer at home carried out the 'How to take ownership of files and folders in Windows XP' as per Arie.
thanks to all. PC owner happy with result, but I will give it a couple of days because I am not sure how she lost ownership.
