greenhead - Welcome to the Board :)

Any signs of life from the computer at all - power light, drive light, etc? Any indication that the drive is spinning up?

Possible scenarios - failed hard drive or failed PSU (Power Supply Unit).

Given that you have an optical drive run the disk diagnostics from the drive manufacturer .......

thank you for responding so soon, there's all signs of life with the computer except what i have stated, guess that wasn't very clear.
lights are on, fans are spinning, power supply working, sound card has power, could be a dodgy HD,
but that doesn't explain lake of monitor, keboard & mouse!

When you attempt to boot up do you see the POST screen on the monitor?

What colour is the monitor power light showing - green or orange (standby)?

There are no lights on the keyboard? - When you press the Caps Lock Key does the Caps Lock light come on?

Are you using a wireless keyboard and mouse or conventional PS/2 or USB?

If a non-wireless mouse it it an optical mouse which would normally light up - on the sensor in the base and generally elsewhere - you are saying that there are no signs of life on the mouse - is that correct?

Have you tried booting into Safe Mode?

the monitor led light changes from green 3 secs to orange, both keyboard and mouse are standard cable connected /ps2.
never any sign of life from them at this stage.......no lights or flashes......
the actual screen shows no info...........
when attempting reboot there is a small clicking sound from one of the HDs
but this stops after lifting finger off reboot button.
The machine then goes through say 5secs of something but cant see what and just gets stuck there if you like!

The monitor is powering up and then going into standby as it is receiving no video signal - that is to be expected under these circumstances - i.e. Windows not loading.

From the other symptoms it is impossible to say if it is a hard drive (clicking sounds are never good news) or motherboard problem (lack of any POST info - that's the white text on a black screen which flashes by before Windows boots)

I would definitely run the disk diagnostics on the hard drive(s) - if you don't know the make you will need to look inside the case and maybe remove the drive(s) to check. I posted the URL's for the various manufacturer's diagnostics earlier.

With the computer powered down and switched off at the wall socket I would remove and reseat all the plug in cards, ribbon cables and power cables. Do not touch the CPU and I see little point in removing the RAM at this stage as you have not reported any BIOS beep errors.

Incidentally when the computer started normally was there a beep almost immediately after booting up and, if there was, do you still hear it?
