On October 1st, my ISP (Verizon.net) dropped its news reader function. I'm looking for a replacement, preferably a free one.

I only look at a couple of Usenet and Google groups and can get to them direct through Google, but I can't find a way to filter the flamers, OT addicts, Political arguments and people selling knock-off Gucci purses and Rolex watches, so I can just see the posts germane to the newsgroup's subject. One one particular group, the "nuggets" are outnumbered by the undesirables by a ration of at least 50:1!

    Any recommendations would be appreciated.

Interestingly, VZ didn't bother to tell anyone they were killing the feature. I spent about 90 minutes in an online chat session with someine on Bangladesh, watching him try to figure it out. You'd think VZ would at least tell their tech support people!

I only found out the proper story when I searched the FAQs on the home page. It came up about the 5th item on the list on only the second day after the cancellation. Really good Customer Service (NOT!)

I use Outlook Express. Can't beat the price and there's nothing to dowload.

Wildly amusing was their claim of decreased demand for usenet. Compare that BS to a proliferation of usenet providers.

while they no longer develop the free edition if you can lay hands on ver4 it is an excellent TEXT usenet client. If you were also fishing for a binaries recommendation: SABnzbd+

evil timewarner cable took the same approach: turn it off and hope no one notices groups MIA. Some of their policy decisions are as demeted as VZ

That would require money. It is so much simpler to hire cretins, leave them ignorant, and annoy customers into not bothering to call.

Since it was only one newsgroup and I'd become rather fed up with the amount of flamers, Glenn Beck supporters, Rush Linbaugh supporters and other morons on the group (which was supposed to be about RV travel!), I decided to bag it.

Incidentally, I couldn't find a way of filtering those clowns out on Outlook Express.
