    Hi,
I have been pointed to this forum from someone on DVDoctor as they have been trying to solve my problem. In short,

I'm on my Mum's computer and every so often, ususally no more than 10 minutes after her Windows XP operating PC has been started, we get a

'Services and Controller application encountered a problem. Do you want me to tell Windows?' Screen.

Very quickly after that the following message appears:

The system process C\\windows\system32\services.exe terminated unexpectedly with the system code 1073741819. The system will shut down. Then I get

Generic Host Process for win32 encountered a problem and needs to shut down
Then the computer closes itself down. Bummer. What is happening?

I have run adaware, spybot s&D and Windows updates is running as far as I can tell. I have also done the same with the computer in safe network mode, but the problem continues. Anyone got any ideas?

As seemed the norm here, I have posted the results of my hijackthis search, but wouldn't have a clue what to do with it, which is where I was hoping someone may be able to give me some pointers. I would be very grateful.

Hello and welcome to WindowsBBS Forums.

Yes your Mum certainly has an infection. Email worm Stration in particular. I suppose she opened up an email she shouldn't have.

    Lets fix things up some.

Below you will find my results and recommendations from your HijackThis! log file analysis. Please read ALL instructions carefully BEFORE proceeding.

Please do as instructed below in the order presented.

Please follow these instructions, exactly, for proper HJT installation. Please place HJT into ITS OWN PERMANANT FOLDER. It must not be installed on the desktop nor in any temp folders.

You can do this by going to My Computer (Windows key+e) then double click on C: then right click and select New then Folder and name it HJT. Move HijackThis.exe into this folder (C:\HJT\HijackThis.exe). When you run HijackThis.exe from C:\HJT folder and have it "Fixed checked" it will create a backup file of modifications to use if restore is necessary which is easily accessible.

Download the Killbox from here and save it to the desktop.
    • Double-click the KillBox icon on your desktop to open it
    • Select "Delete on Reboot "
    • Then select "All files ".
Copy the file names below to the clipboard by highlighting them and pressing Control-C:
    C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\confatm.dll
    C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\atmstat.dll
    C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\ccfgwshb.dll
    C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\confwmv.dll
    C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\wmvstat.dll
    C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\e1.dl
    C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\atmmgr32.dll
    C:\WINDOWS\System32\dxdislbi.dll
    C:\WINDOWS\System32\mprwanp.dll
    C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\wmvmgr32.dll

    Return to Killbox
    • Go to the File menu, and choose "Paste from Clipboard ".
    • Click the red-and-white [Delete File] button.
    • Click "Yes" at the Delete on Reboot prompt. Click "No" at the 'Pending Operations' prompt.

Do not allow a reboot yet.

Open Hijackthis, select the [Do a system scan only] button and look over the following entries I have listed, check the boxes [] next to them and press the [Fix Checked] button. When you are doing this, make sure you have No IE windows, nor any other browsers open, including this one. Reboot if I have specified below, and post a fresh HijackThis log.

Reboot post a new HJT log back into this thread please.

Once your Mums PC ics cleaned up, you'll need to get her Windows updated with the proper security patches, running as she is will only increase the amount of time you spend cleaning her PC, rather than enjoying her cooking. :p

Thank you TeMerc for your help. Before posting the results of hijackthis I should admit that I didn't manage to stop the computer from rebooting after I did the killbox instructions. Sorry. I proceeded with the other instructions upon reboot. Hope this doesn't make me an arse... Here you are.

Could I also just add that whenever I try to go to the Windows Automatic updates page I get a message

    [Error number: 0x80070424]
The website has encountered a problem and cannot display the page you are trying to view. The options provided below might help you solve the problem.

I thought I had updated her computer to service pack 2 but evidently there were bugs that stopped it happening properly. How can I get these updates working properly?? Is this part of the same problem?

Do not attempt to get updates, they will not work until the system is clear of nasties.

I'm seeing another infection, Goldun\Haxdoor, we'll need to run that tool to clean it up before proceeding.

    First part of fix:

Download haxfix.exe and save it to your desktop.
    • Double click on haxfix.exe to install haxfix. (standard installation path is c:\program Files\haxfix)
    • Checkmark "Create a desktop icon "
    • Click "Next "
    • When the installation is completed, make sure that the checkmark "Launch HaxFix" is placed
    • Click "Finish "

A red "dos window" (dos box) will open with options:
    • Make logfile
    • Run auto fix
    • Run manual fix
    • Exit Haxfix

    • Select option 1. Make logfile by typing 1 and then pressing Enter
    • Haxfix will start scanning the computer. When it is finished a logfile will open: haxlog.txt
    • Copy the contents of that logfile and paste it into this thread. (c:\haxfix.txt)

OK, guess there wasn't any infection, better to be safe than sorry.

Lets fix what is remaining in the previous HJT log.

Access your Add or Remove Programs Control Panel by hitting your [Start] button, select Control Panel and click on Add or Remove Programs. Then find the following programs and click the [Change|Remove] button for each, if they are listed. If they are not, continue with instructions
    MyWebSearch

Back to Killbox and using the same instructions as previous(no worries if ya let it reboot, sometimes ya can stop it, some times ya can't), insert the following files for deletion:
    C:\WINDOWS\System32\wmvconf.exe
    C:\WINDOWS\System32\atmconf.exe
    C:\WINDOWS\System32\e1.dll

Run HJT, and place a check next to the following lines, then, with all browsers and windows closed, hit 'Fix checked':

    O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [wmvdiag] C:\WINDOWS\System32\wmvconf.exe

    O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [My Web Search Bar] rundll32 C:\PROGRA~1\MYWEBS~1\bar\2.bin\MWSBAR.DLL,S

    O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [atmdiag] C:\WINDOWS\System32\atmconf.exe

    O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [MyWebSearch Email Plugin] C:\PROGRA~1\MYWEBS~1\bar\2.bin\mwsoemon.exe

    O20 - AppInit_DLLs: e1.dll

Reboot post a new HJT log back into this thread please. Also let me know of any persistent problems as well as any new ones.

As for new or continuous problems, the full computer shutdown has not happened now for a long time today. It was replaced for a time by a tendency for IE to shutdown, but that too seems to have stopped happening. I can't say never again, obviously, yet, but going on what I was dealing with this time yesterday things are a lot, lot better. Should I try going onto the Windows updates?? I am all ears.....
I hope you are having a wonderful day, by the way.
    Cheers,
    Jeremy

I suppose I forgot to mention that when the computer boots up it has an irritating habit of bringin up the 'System32' folder, which I haven't been able to get rid of in the Startup menus or anything. If I could clear that it would be ace, but I don't know if it's connected to this problem. My Mum didn't (as far as she knows) ask the computer to start posting this folder on startup.

Ok, looks pretty good, but I'd like to check for some hidden items.

    Download catchme.exe form here:

    http://www.gmer.net/catchme.exe

    Save file to your desktop.
Double click it and let it run.
A "dos" window will pop up while the program scans system for hidden files/processes.
It will tell you when done and lets you know if anything is found.
You can close the "dos" window.
A log file called catchme.txt will be placed on the desktop.

Please post the contents of that file.
It should be small enough to copy/paste here.

Don't be tempted to try to find/delete all files that this log shows.
Sometimes malware hides legit files as well.

    Then:
Open HJT, click the [None of the above, just start the program ]button.
Then click the [Config ]button in the lower right hand of the program.
Then select the [Misc Tools ]button.
In the upper left hand side of the program tick the two boxes [List also minor sections (full)] button and the[ List empty sections (complete)] and hit the [Generate StarupList log] button, select 'Yes' when prompted by the dialog box. The resultant scan will produce a notepad log file, please paste that log file back here for me to review.

And also - just to throw it in, Windows Updates is still refusing to load with the same message as posted before. It gives me a split second glimpse of the 'analysing' page before going to the 'fail' message page. As you said, I need to get those sorted and uploaded to protect the computer for the future.
    Cheers.

Ok, it looks like I found something that ought not be there in the services. Need to double check tho so please do as instructed below.

Please download the Get Service file from here
Extract the file to the c:\ drive. Then navigate to the c:\getservices and double-click on the getservices.bat file. A notepad will open up. Please paste the contents of that notepad as a reply to this post.

OK, that didn't give me the info I was looking for.

Lets look manually then try and kill it\delete it.

Go to: Start > Run > type " services.msc ", then click OK

When the Services window appears scroll down to the following mdxgthkn service.

Click it to highlight it, then <right-click> and select: Properties
Select and set "Service Status" option to "Stop"
Select: "Startup type" and set it to "Disabled ", click Apply, then OK.

    Then:

    Download Atribunes ATF Cleaner
    • Double-click ATF-Cleaner.exe to run the program.
    • Tick the following boxes:
      • Windows Temp
      • Current User Temp
      • All User Temp
      • Cookies<<<---By deleting your cookies, you will have to re-enter any passwords and log-in info for any sites you are usually required to do so with.
      • Temporary Internet Files
      • History
      • Prefetch
      • Java Cache
    • Click the [Empty Selected] button.
We'll empty the Recycle Bin later, once we know you're all cleaned up and nothing needs to be restored.

Run me another start up list with HJT and we'll see if it's still present.
