I just received notice of this update. I have XP-home edition. This is a very large update, over 5 hours. It is considered critical by Microsoft. I wanted to just check with al you experts if I should proceed? I don't know what Microsoft.NET Framework means.

    Hi,

    You can read .NET Framework

If you have software that is coded in .NET Framework you will need it, if not you could remove it from your XP system. I never installed it on my XP system.

AFAIK there is no easy way to determine if you have software that requires it, but if you uninstall it & try to start software that needs it, the software will let you know.

Thank you Arie. I think I can forget it. I assume it doesn't have anything to do with email to .net.

    re: NET Framework 3.5 update

I live in rural MT and have slow dialup. I have Win XP and all the high priority updates except for this NET Framework 3.5. Windows Updates automatically, but this NET Framework 3.5 Update was slowing down my pc for days while downloading. I then turned off all Programs and let it run alone, but after 8 hrs it was still only halfway. I cancelled it and wrote to Microsoft. They replied w/ the following long fix. I am a Senior lady and why ought i do all this work for what they claim i need?

Step 1: Download Microsoft Windows Installer Cleanup Utility
    1. Please visit: http://download.microsoft.com/download/E/9/D/E9D80355-7AB4-45B8-80E8-983A48D5E1BD/msicuu2.exe
    2. Save the file on your Desktop
    3. Double click the file "msicuu2.exe" on the Desktop to install it.

Step 2: Remove all .NET Framework components
    1. Click "Start" -> "(All) Programs "-> "Windows Installer Clean Up ".
    2. Please locate and remove .NET Framework 2.0, 3.0 and 3.5 and their updates.

After removing .NET Framework components, reinstall .NET Framework 3.5.

Step 3: Manually downloading and installing Microsoft .NET Framework 3.5
    =======================================================
Please note: The size of Microsoft .NET Framework 3.5 and .NET Framework 3.5 Service Pack 1 is a little big. Your patience to download the update is much appreciated.

    1. Click the following link:
Microsoft .NET Framework 3.5 and .NET Framework 3.5 Service Pack 1

    http://download.microsoft.com/downl...B-8973-E1E22C556AF4/NDP35SP1-KB958484-x86.exe

    2. When the file download window appears, please click "Save ", and follow the directions to save it on the Desktop. After downloading Microsoft .NET Framework 3.5 setup file on your Desktop, double-click to manually install it.

    For Dial up users

Hi Crystalwoman, I am in the same situation as you with dial-up and agree the 200+MB download is not in the cards. What you can do is try to get to a friend or relative with a high speed (DSL or Cable) connection and download the full package from this URL. Look for it about 3/4's down the page under "Instructions" and "Full Package ". Down load it to your friends desktop then copy the file to a CD/DVD or USB stick, then install it to your computer from there. Once installed on your computer go online and update from MS Update. Worked for me.
