Security researchers have released new tools that can bypass the encryption used to protect many types of wireless routers. Ironically, the tools take advantage of design flaws in a technology pushed by the wireless industry that was intended to make the security features of modern routers easier to use.

At issue is a technology called 'Wi-Fi Protected Setup' (WPS) that ships with many routers marketed to consumers and small businesses.

Excellent, but scary article. The linked site appears to be an excellent site for security information. The writer was a technology writer for the Washington Post for several years.

Thankfully my modem/router can turn this feature off (I don't need it anyway), and it was one of the things I done when I first set it up.

I actually didn't realize that the WPS feature and the routers Pin were enabled on my router until after I read the article and went in to check the settings on my Netgear router. I never had the routers Pin number disabled and upon looking in the advanced wireless settings, I was able to luckily disable the routers Pin number entirely so I guess I am secured from this type of attack.

Also I've never used WPS since I prefer to configure my routers settings manually so I won't miss its functionality.

I will install Reaver and test it out next time I come across a router that uses wifi Protected Access. My router is an old WRT54g running dd-wrt firmware so I cannot test my network. My neighbor has a new Netgear...
