    Hi Ramona-

I've been using NS4.7.9, had a mess of misery with 6 and have had enough problems with 4 that I hadn't considered 7.0 until a couple of days ago.

Couldn't stand it any longer and wound up downloading a 10+ version from Silly Dog ( entirely new to me and just took a chance because his output seemed eminently sensible)

My computer life is really quite uncomplicated so I downloaded on top of what I had. Feared really that I might lose something in the process. Anyhow, lo and behold I have two icons on my desktop---one shows my old 4 design (skins I guess you call them) and the other is a spiffy new one that is real cool. All us old folks use that kind of language.

I'm enjoying trading back and forth. Are there any problems to look out for?

    Hi 2totango,

You're getting pretty frisky, trying the new Netscape 7.0! Good for you, and using the Stand Alone Version from SillyDog, should bring you no problems. Just kick back and enjoy.

I did find this statement a bit disturbing:

.....so I downloaded on top of what I had.

You didn't really install on top of 4.79 did you? Nah, no way, you wouldn't do that now would you? You see, Netscape 7.0 isn't an upgrade for Netscape Communicator, and they should be treated as two separate programs.

During the install of 7.0 do you remember if you changed the location of the Program? The default would have been Netscape 7.0. Unless you changed the default, I imagine that 7.0 installed in its own folder, and converted your 4.79 Profile, especially as everything is working so far.

Unless you have uninstalled 4.79, you might want to leave the Desktop Icon where it is. Yes, the new Icon is spiffy as can be, and yes, we do all use that type of verbiage. I think it's pretty neat, how about you? ;)

    Enjoy!

    Ramona :D

    Hi Ramona-

Forgive the delay. We're working like crazy at our house getting ready for a giant garage sale on Sat-Sun.

Yes I did install over 4.7.9. Interesting you should ask--got a message from Netscape this a.m. asking me to update the version that is still using the old "skin" (except for the new mini icons).

Haven't had any problems with either version up to this point. Still have all the old features (addresses, bookmarks, Edit-Preferences menu etc.) on the old skinned version and the whole new version works just fine.

    What were your apprehensions?

Netscape 7.0 and Netscape 4.x are two entirely different programs, and should not be installed in the same folder under any circumstances. Additionally, N7.0 is not an upgrade to N4.x, but a new program.

I believe Ramona took your "installed over the top" comment to mean that you installed N7.0 in the same folder as N4.x... Hopefully this isn't the case, and N7 has its own program folder. If I am mistaken, Ramona can clarify... ;)

    Hello Tranquillo-

As a medium numbskull I don't follow you.
A WinXP search for NS4 just finds a couple of Ramona's instruction pages about installation.

NS 7.0 gets the only major references and Control Panel only shows 7.0.

    Do I follow you?:)

    tranquilo and 2totango,

    tranquilo
You are correct in assuming that my concern was that 2totango had installed 7.0 in the 4.79 folder.

    2totango
In the Add/Remove applet are you also seeing Netscape Communicator 4.79 listed?

    Ramona-

Hope you weren't worried. All explosions carefully damped.

    Thank you once again.
