    i have some problems with netscape 7.02 while running windows 2000 (minor annoying ones)

    there are a bunch of pages where it will not load graphics, yet on others it loads them all. to fix i have to right click on the blank image and select view image then back into the page and that image will be loaded.

    some pages a popup warning will appear saying that netscape could not connect with that page. but then load the page. i think it has to do with advertising images and thus freed up all cookies but this has not worked.

    any ideas? i've exhausted my limited netscape knowledge.

    Welcome to the Forum, rsdyrda!

    Hi rsdyrda,

    Can you give us some links for those annoying pages? That error sometimes means that there are too many users trying to connect to the pages. Or it could be poorly coded pages. However, as you say a bunch of pages, I have to wonder if it might be in your configuration.

    Following are some workarounds to try. Just do them one at a time, in order to pinpoint the culprit:

    Check your Proxy settings located at:
    Edit | Preferences | Advanced | Proxies.
    You should have "Direct Connection to the Internet" selected, unless you really do have a proxy setup.

    If you have a Firewall, try disabling the Firewall to see if this makes a difference. Also disable any Web Accelerator or Cache utility you may be using.

    Use the Windows FIND tool to search for HOSTS (no extension). If found, rename to HOSTS.BAK. Ignore HOSTS files that have an extension. If this has no effect, then revert the name back to HOSTS.

    If you have Popup controls activated, then click on the Manage button. You should see some twenty websites which are allowed. You may need to remove some of them. However, in some cases, functionality could be lost. One culprit which can cause problems, is Doubleclick. Sometimes ad.doubleclick.net goes down, and you get that message. You may have to allow Doubleclick, if this is the case.

    If you use QuickLaunch try disabling the feature.

    Have you by chance blocked images in your Edit | Preferences | Privacy & Security | Images?

    We need more information so we can better diagnose the problem.

    Thanks!

    Ramona :D

    www.avsim.com
    www.flightinfo.com

    are two examples of not being able to connect.

    I donwloaded the same netscape at work and do not have these problems there, I wonder if it was in my ie setups that transferred over?!?!

    renamed hosts (it was in my windows/system32 directory)

    on direct connect to internet

    it is setup to accept all images. an exaple of images not being seen is like www.aviationweather.gov. all of the little icons next to the description will not load.

    i've scratched my head on this quite a bit.

    now it has spread to ie 6

    Internet Explorer was unable to link to the Web page you requested. The page might be temporarily unavailable.

    --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

    Please try the following:

    Click the Refresh button, or try again later.

    If you have visited this page previously and you want to view what has been stored on your computer, click File, and then click Work Offline.

    For information about offline browsing with Internet Explorer, click the Help menu, and then click Contents and Index.

    This is the error i get for IE 6 now.....same problems as netscape. this is frustrating.

    rsdyrda,

    I tried the links which you posted, and they all load just fine here. Your IE settings were not transferred when you installed Netscape.

    Since you are also getting the same message in IE, then you need to do some more troubleshooting. Are you behind a firewall, and if so, temporarily disable.

    With Netscape closed:
    Open Internet Explorer
    Browse to your *.slt Folder
    C:\Documents and Settings\user_name\Application Data\Mozilla\Profiles\profilename\xxxxxxxx.slt
    NOTE: These files are hidden by default.
    To see hidden files:
    1. On the Tools menu in Windows Explorer, click Folder Options
    2. Click the View tab
    3. Under Hidden files and folders, click Show hidden files and folders

    Delete the entire Cache folder
    Delete these files:
    history.dat
    XUL.mfl
    localstore.rdf
    The Cache folder, and the files will be rebuilt when Netscape is restarted.

    Do a find for *.tmp, and delete all files found.

    As a general rule, the message you are receiving indicates a busy server, but again, it could be as simple as needing to delete your Cache.

    Post back and let us know if any of the above brings joy. Believe me, I know your frustration...

    Hi rsdyrda,

    Did you by chance open the HOSTS file to see if there was anything listed there. For example: do you see ad.doubleclick.net listed in the file? Is there anything listed there other than 127.0.0.1?

    here is my host file

    # Copyright (c) 1993-1999 Microsoft Corp.
    #
    # This is a sample HOSTS file used by Microsoft TCP/IP for Windows.
    #
    # This file contains the mappings of IP addresses to host names. Each
    # entry should be kept on an individual line. The IP address should
    # be placed in the first column followed by the corresponding host name.
    # The IP address and the host name should be separated by at least one
    # space.
    #
    # Additionally, comments (such as these) may be inserted on individual
    # lines or following the machine name denoted by a '#' symbol.
    #
    # For example:
    #
    # 102.54.94.97 rhino.acme.com # source server
    # 38.25.63.10 x.acme.com # x client host

    127.0.0.1 localhost

    Thanks again for your efforts.

    rsdyrda,

    I just caught this after reading the IE thread again:
    all the pictures/graphics have this message in it.

    windows 2000

    ie 6.0.2800.1106 sp1 q818529

    Have you applied this update, rsdyrda?

    http://www.microsoft.com/windows/ie/downloads/critical/818529/default.asp

    I also noted that you are using a third party popup stopper. Netscape has its own Popup Control Manager, and you really don't need the Panicware app. Frankly I would disable it, or uninstall, your choice.

    There is also another thread on the IE Forum, where the user is unable to connect to specific websites, and applying the above patch cleared the problem. See here:

    rsdyrda Hi

    Thats HOSTS.sam your looking for a host with no file extension
    On this system there is a
    host.sam
    hosts
    LMhosts.sam
    HOSTS.bak
    hosts.-----------.backup
    DLLHOST.lgc etc etc
    I dont know if panicware uses a host file so , you could try uninstalling it then renaming (hosts) Keep in mind some other program may put it back .

    Lets not forget the most obvious, clear the (cache) tif's of both browsers

    Since you have similar browsing problems in IE6 and Netscape I would concentrate on the HOSTS file and third-party internet programs (adblockers, web accelerators, firewalls, etc) that are running at the same time as IE or Netscape.
    On the HOSTS file:
    Make sure Windows Explorer view/folder options is set to "show all files" See:
    http://www.fjsmjs.com/IE/hosts.htm

    From what I've gathered the Win2000 HOSTS file location would be inside this folder:
    C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\DRIVERS\ETC

    On Panicware's popup stopper....even though you say you've disabled it, I would double-check to make sure it's not reloading when you restart Windows. Disabling using the icon in the system tray might only disable until your next reboot so check within the Popup-stopper's program options.preferences to keep it from starting when Windows starts.

    here is the hosts file in that location (to me it looks like what it should):

    127.0.0.1 localhost

    as far as panicware it has been removed from my system. it is not the problem, ie worked fine for 1 yr with it on. this problem happened when i installed netscape.

    rsdyrda,

    Your HOSTS files are A-OK, and we can eliminate them as a source of your problem.

    Do this:
    Start | Run
    Type: msconfig
    Click on the "Startup" tab
    What is listed?

    Have you uninstalled the popup stopper? That seems to be what you indicated. Have you disabled your Firewall, if you use one?

    I found a thread which the user had a problem similar to yours:
    Internet Explorer - Unable to view any websites

    It was suggested that the user try this address: http://216.239.51.101/
    If this works and you get the google home page, your computer is not configured for DNS. Phone your ISP and ask them how you do this.

    Something else I failed to ask: have you spoofed your user agent string in Netscape's prefs.js or user.js file?

    rsdyrda,

    This will be a rather long post for which I apologize, however, as you are not able to access most pages, have copied more information on your problem:

    Panicware Support

    I can't open new links and/or new browser windows.

    To visit some new links you may need to either briefly disable Pop-Up Stopper Free by double-clicking the system tray icon, or hold the CTRL when following a new link to allow the blocked window to open.

    Pop-Up Stopper Pro or Companion can be disabled by clicking on the pop-up control button on the toolbar. You may also try setting our products to a less aggressive setting in the product options.

    If you are running Zone Alarm Pro, This could be your problem as it has its own pop-up blocking feature that inserts the following code into each and every web page:

    <!-- BEGIN Popup Blocker -->
    <script language='javascript'>
    NS_ActualOpen=window.open;
    function NS_NullWindow(){this.window;}
    function NS_NewOpen(url,nam,atr){return(new NS_NullWindow());}
    window.open=NS_NewOpen;
    </script>
    <!-- END Popup Blocker -->

    With this code in place, there is no way a page can open any new window. You can verify this by opening any page, then right-clicking and select the "View Source" option and see if that code is there.

    If you are not running Zone Alarm Pro and are having problems opening links, or opening links in new windows, or viewing pop-up window content, please review the following: HERE:
    http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;EN-US;q281679

    Hint: In this article, it is helpful to read the entire article first, as the last step, listed as Workaround, may solve your problem in just a few keystrokes!

    Please note that these are common problems with Internet Explorer, as documented by Microsoft, and have nothing to do with Panicware software products.

    MS Workaround:
    RESOLUTION
    To resolve this problem in Internet Explorer, follow these steps:

    1. Quit all programs that are running.
    2. Click Start, and then click Run.
    3. Type regsvr32 urlmon.dll, and then click OK.
    4. When you receive the "DllRegisterServer in urlmon.dll succeeded" message, click OK.

    If this does not resolve the problem, repeat steps 2 through 4 for each of the following files (in step 3, replace Urlmon.dll with each of the file names below):

    * Shdocvw.dll
    * Msjava.dll
    * Actxprxy.dll
    * Oleaut32.dll
    * Mshtml.dll
    * Browseui.dll
    * Shell32.dll (Windows XP and Windows 2000 only)

    If the problem is still not resolved, verify that the following registry values are present and correct:

    HKLM\SOFTWARE\Classes\Interface\{00020400-0000-0000-C000-000000000046}
    Name: (Default)
    Value: IDispatch
    HKLM\SOFTWARE\Classes\Interface\{00020400-0000-0000-C000-000000000046}\ProxyStubClsid
    Name: (Default)
    Value: {00020420-0000-0000-C000-000000000046}
    HKLM\SOFTWARE\Classes\Interface\{00020400-0000-0000-C000-000000000046}\ProxyStubClsid32
    Name: (Default)
    Value: {00020420-0000-0000-C000-000000000046}

    If the problem is still not resolved, reinstall Internet Explorer. If you are using the version of Internet Explorer that is included with your operating system, reinstall or repair your operating system.

    In that event, then you definitely have a Windows problem. I would stick with WelshJim on the IE Forum...

    Hi rsdyrda,

    Thanks very much for getting back to us with your solution!

    If you had been able to get to your msconfig, we probably would have seen that rascal sitting there in your startup.

    At least you know the cause, and it is a painful, but learning experience! I've had issues with Norton too, so I know your angst!

    Cheers!
