I was configuring a new thinkpad for my wife and was removing McAfee from the bloatware pile and the machine hung. I restarted it by holding in the power button and I get back to the desktop but that's it. Nothing happens from there. While the mouse moves, I cannot click to start anything.

It's like explorer.exe is in a loop as the hour glass is present when the mouse hovers over the taskbar.

I cannot even run the factory reset program

    Any thoughts out there?

Hi cspgsl. Try pressing F8 on startup to access the advanced boot options menu and select Last Known Good Configuration. See if that gets the computer to boot up properly. If that doesn't work see if you can boot into Safe Mode and hopefully explorer.exe works there.

Thanks, last good doesn't make any difference.

Safe mode allows me to open explorer and any programs but there are no recovery options there

I am thinking that I might have to load the OS from another disk I have and start over

updating the bios and performing a system recovery from the onboard partition seems to have done the trick
