Is there any reason (apart from your own preference for how to arrange your work on your desktop) to choose either "open in a new tab" or "open in a new window "? I mean, is there any perceptible improvement in speed of loading, less load on resources, or anything like that? I'm using IE8.

You should be able to test this in a matter of minutes;)

But odds are you won't notice a thing.

My company uses a web based database application. I keep it open in one IE window and use a different window to do all other things... And I use tabs in the secone IE window.

Yes, I do it more or less like you do. I have tried experimentally to see if there's any difference, but couldn't really tell - connection speeds can vary wildly throughout the day. So I wondered if there's any system-inherent reason to choose one method over another to optimise performance. Looks to me like you're saying no, there isn't.

Supposedly, using Tabs uses less system resources. However, with modern computers, you won't notice any real difference in performance. remember...resources are for USE. What's the point in having free resources unless you can use them! Conservation of resources is no longer a major factor with modern computers and modern operating systems.

I take your point, Tony - thanks for input! - but we don't all have state-of-the-art, latest model, modern computers ;-) I'm scratching around on a 2002 (? I think) unbranded, 1.3GHz bucket-shop machine running on XP which I have to coax into life every morning to do my odd jobs on line, and any resources it has are sorely strained.

But I'll follow your advice and prefer tabs over new windows wherever it's convenient for the work pattern.

You should be able to monitor the difference in used memory via Task Manager, tabs vs new windows.
