    Hi all,

Why does a new (2nd) pst file appear in my existing pst file? I created a new pst file thinking that Outlook would let me choose between the two, but, instead, the new pst file appears at the bottom of my existing pst file's folder pane as Personal Folder 1.

Should I be creating a new Outlook profile, instead, if I want everything totally separated from my existing profile? Would a second profile have its own pst, or would it be a part of my existing pst?

    EDIT: I have Outlook 2007.

Thanks, lj, but it's not what I'm looking for.

    Hi James
    Create a new profile.
It’ll have own pst file and email accounts.

    More info:
An outlook profile can have more than 1 data file (that’s all a pst file is). That’s why when you created a new 1 it shows up in current profile.

Go to control panel – mail .
Can then add profile, check, add, delete data files for each profile and select defaults.

I'm leaning towards that option, but I assume I'll be prompted by Outlook to choose which profile I want to access first?

Yes you'll have to chose which profile before Outlook will finish loading.

I've been playing around with a bit here. I recreated a new mail account within my existing profile, and all of my messages downloaded to the same inbox. I deleted those messages, exited Outlook, and opened Mail 32-bit in the Control Panel. From there, I redirected all incoming messages from the new POP account to pst 2. For the moment, I don't have a problem with that arrangement, but it makes one wonder if the original pst could face easier corruption with two psts under the same profile. I'm just guessing here.

EDIT: I found out that a person can download custom folders from their Yahoo accounts by using IMAP instead of POP settings. I deleted the above POP account, and recreated it using IMAP settings...

By downloading these custom-made folders, it saves me from creating new message filtering rules since the message rules are already in-place online.

The weird thing I don't understand is that Outlook 2007 created a special pst just for this account. Another oddity is that you can't move the IMAP account to another pst. The change folder option is not there. Interesting.

After toying with this all day, I have finally decided to keep my default profile for my ISP's POP account, and create a new profile for my two yahoo IMAP accounts.

It is a bit of a pain to deal with the profile selection box each time I open Outlook 2007, but it is faster than signing-in to web-based mail account sites. Plus, I get the added benefit of missing out on the latest Miley Cyrus news when the mail page redirects after signing out. (yeeha! ;))

One last note if anyone is interested.

Whenever I created an IMAP email account (whether in the default profile or not), Outlook created a dedicated pst file for each IMAP account, and each of those pst files starts with the letters IM.

    1. IMxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx@isp.com-00000001
    2. IMxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx@isp.com-00000002

A newly created profile creates its own pst, also, and in this case it was named Outlook1.

It all sounds confusing, but, as of now, I have two profiles (Outlook & Outlook1) and four pst files - with three of the pst files linked to the new profile.

This info may not mean beans to most folks, but I thought I would share it nevertheless.
