    Hi, y'all,

My son just purchased a 1999 Dell computer, running Win98SE, from one of his fellow slaves. It presently has a DSL modem installed whch he, and his betrothed, can't afford to feed right now.

According to the original packing slip, the computer had a "v9.05/56K PCI Datafax" modem installed.

Is it posdsible to 'download and re-install' the original modem from the "internet" ? If so, from 'where'??

I'm having a brain-fart , here, while trying to help my kid.

As always - THANKS for any and ALL help offerred!! :D

    Hiya,
I think you are slightly on the wrong track here, if I read right then your V90 56K PCI Modem is a Internal Fax/Voice Modem
in the form of a PCI Card installed in one of your PCI slots on your mobo.
When installed Windows should detect it as New Hardware Found and install the drivers for you. But then you still need a ISP for the connection.
    Hope that helps

If there is a 56k modem installed then you can remopve it from the case and look for numbers or markings on it, it should have an FCC ID number on it that will tell you the manufacter and then you can download drivers for it. look here for FCC ID #'s http://www.fcc.gov/oet/fccid/

If there isn't a modem installed then you can buy a cheap Winmodem and use it to dial up the net. look here for some prices http://www.pricewatch.com/

Now you will still have to have a phone line and an ISP for a listing of ISP's in your area look here

    hope some of this helps

Thanks hawk & bubba, for the replies.

And . . . I apologize for not getting back here sooner.

The problem has been solved. :D It was as simple as plugging the phone cord into the original modem instead of the DSL modem. My son had been led to believe that the original modem had been "removed ".

Another lesson learned: Pull it out far enough to see what you're doing and don't rely on feeling with your fingers alone. He was online within minutes of making the switch.

    Thanks, again.

For future reference, there should be a Service Tag number on the side or back of the Dell. Armed with that information you can got to Dell's website and find drivers for everything that came with the computer originally, obviously anything added to it after the original purchase wouldn't be there.

I've used this for a couple of the machines here at work so I could format the HDD and install WIN98 without having to use their recovery disc and getting loaded down with all the junk programs they include.
