I wanted to update my nvidia driver.

The new install was more than just a driver update.

It was a more active program.

Now frequently when I am looking at a web page, a small square will appear like a window showing the desktop with the icon of another file.

I think this is the result of the nvidia installation.

I would delete the nvidia program but nvidia is the graphics program for this computer (using XP) so if I uninstall it, I might damage my entire graphics capacity.

I would like to uninstall this garbage program but keep the driver for my basic graphics.

    suggestions appreciated

Uninstall the 'update'. Worst case Windows will remove the driver & you'll be left with a generic Windows driver.

Then either get a new nvidia driver from Windows Update, or from nvidia (be sure to select diver only.

When you right click on a folder in the task bar at the bottom of the Desktop screen (I am on Win XP), at the bottom of the menu is a choice: "nvidia options. "

A dialog box opens with the following choices:

these are all check boxes on the left side of the dialog box:
    nview maximize (shift + max)
    send window to display n
    send application to display n
    send window to desktop n
    send application to desktop n
    Transparent
    Always on top
    Visible on all desktops
    Collapse to this desktop
    Individual settings

These are clickable buttons on the right side :
    Enable all options
    Disable all options
    Enable multi-desk options
    Disable multi-desk options

I guessing this is the program listed in "Add/Remove Programs." Because drivers are usually not listed there.

Drivers are listed under "Display drivers" in Device Manager.

    My graphics driver there is
    NVIDIA RIVA TNT2 Model 64/Model 64 Pro

There are options there for disabling uninstalling or updating the driver.

I am thinking that the plan should be to uninstall the "Nvidia Options" program in Add/Remove Programs. The problem with this is that the program in Add/Remove Programs is labeled "Nvidia Drivers." Hopefully this will not affect the driver itself.

    Opinions on this appreciated.

One thing worrying me is that on the nvidia driver site:
    http://www.nvidia.com/Download/index.aspx?lang=en-us
there is no listing for TNT2 RIVA. Only the GeForce drivers are listed.

Yours is a legacy device. Get the driver from Sony (if you think you need it).

If it would bother me enough I'd tackle it anyway. See if the install you did created a system restore point (it should have), then use that to revert back to the previous state.

I have disabled all options on the NVIDIA desktop program.

I will see if that works. It would be nice to know if this program has any uses.

my last action was to disable the desktop nvidia program (somebody should tell them what a pain this is).

But this has not stopped the graphics problems.

So I am going to uninstall the program in Add/Remove Programs. This really is not where drivers are kept anyway.

I have not been able to get to this lately because I have been doing many scans connected to a trojan cleaning operation.

I can returns to this topic when I have finished all the work connected to the trojan cleaning, like changing all my passwords.

I deleted the NVIDIA program from control panel but the strange graphics windows are still appearing. They are like little square windows cut from web pages with the desktop showing through.
