Did you install the drivers from Belkin for the NIC first?

That means there is a problem with the drivers. Make sure that they were installed correctly. Also make sure that the card is connected to the modem or router while installing the drivers. When installing the NIC drivers did a window popup asking for your Win98 CD? If so did you put it in the drive so that the necessary files could be retrieved for the network setup?

    Hi JO198780,

[Aside]If you would like your post to go to the top of the list you can post a reply with the word "Bump ". That will catch the attention of anyone that is interested in your problem or has been helping you and is not in touch for a few days or has lost track with other threads.

You have not gone very far with the installation. I think you could go to Device Manager (Control Panel -> System -> Device Manager tab) open the Network Adapters heading by clicking on the "+ ". Highlight the Belkin adapter and click remove. Go to Add/Remove programs (Control Panel -> Add/Remove Programs) and check if there are any programs related to the Belkin network adapter. Highlight and remove that/those if there are any.

Reread your installation manual. If it suggests to install the drivers before physically installing the card, I would shutdown and remove the card, reboot and run the drivers installation program (then shutdown and replace the card in the slot). The other ways may be to run Add New Hardware in Control Panel or to reboot with the card connected and direct the New hardware wizard (that runs before the desktop loads) to the Belkin drivers CD to reinstall the adapter.

Best would be to reverse what you have done so far (remove the drivers and software), then follow the Belkin instructions as closely as possible.

    Matt

ok well i did one of the things you said, remove the card from device manager, then it asked me to restart, i did, then when it powered back up it asked me for the belkin cd, put it in and it asked me where to copy the files? or something like that, i tryed all the options it gave me and they didnt work, the only way to get passed this is if you either click cancel, or skip file, i clicked skip file, and it asked me to restart again, i did.

After it restarted, i went into add remove programs, found nothing with belkin.

I did add new hardware, asked me to put in the belkin cd, did, got that message on where to copy the drivers or whatever, clicked skip file, and then it asked me for the windows 98 second edition cd :( , which i dont have, i asked my friend if he had a windows 98 cd, he said yeah, but i didnt know it needs SE  . when i startup it says windows 98, shouldnt it say windows 98 SE or something? i guess i cant do anything without the cd.

I don't think it's asking where to copy them to. It's asking where to find the file it needs. When it prompts you for the location of the file, I think you need to browse the Belkin CD and locate the folder that has the .inf file it's looking for. Did it come with instructions? The instructions should show you the folder the inf file for Win98 is located. It quite possibly could be a folder on the CD named Win98 or something similar. Is there one on the CD? If so and it has a file with a .inf extension, browse to that folder and select the .inf file and click OK.

As for the Win98 SE thing, I'm not quite sure what's going on there. If memory serves me correctly, you can find out which version of 98 you're running by right clicking on My Computer and choose properties.

Also, you may have the windows files copied to your computer. In windows explorer, see if you have a windows\options\cabs folder. If the cab folder is there and there's a bunch of cab files in it, try pointing it to that folder when it asks for the CD. Don't remember if you're given the option to browse or not but if you are, give it a try.

ok i got that CD, i get a window that says: "Insert the F5D5000 CD" or whatever (the network card CD) and i click OK, then i get another window that says Copying Files...., and it gives me options on where to copy the files from. i try all the options and none of them work? to get past this window i have to click Skip File, then it asks me to insert the Windows 98SE CD-ROM, i did, clicked OK. then i think i got another window that said the drivers were sucessfully installed, or something like that.

What happens when you try to get online? Were you previously on dialup and are now trying to change to broadband of some type? Is this a new ISP you're trying to use for the first time or have you always used them only with a different networking card installed in your computer?
