My friend has just purchased a new Shuttle FN25 motherboard and some parts and installed them. The POST works fine and recognises hardware, but then XP won't load (from old install on old hard drive). I have told him that I think that this is because Windows has the drivers for the old motherboard loaded and this is causing the failure.

Is this a reasonable assupmtion or am I wrong?

Is there anything that can be done to get the new drivers loaded without formatting and re-installing Windows?

Managed to get around the format by doing this with the hard drive connected to the old set up and then moved to the new mainboard again...

"...Anyway, to get round the HD problem. I went to device manager and found the HD controllers. There were 3 (primary, secondary, and VIA IDE controller)

I clicked on update driver and changed the VIA to generic dual IDE controller.

Then put the HD into my new PC, and voila, it worked.

After that I installed from the mainboard driver CD..

    Better than re-installing and re-formatting etc.. "

Not sure if this is a recommended practice but might help someone out in an emergency.

as above details - I thought all was working, but some USB devices such as BTC9019 URF wireless keyboard, are not recognised. Other USB devices are recognised. Is this a problem because XP needs to be reinstalled and the above shortcut is actually not good?

    silverwork,

You don't necessarily need to format then do a format and 'clean' install of XP. You can do a 'repair' install... see HERE. This should get XP to recognize the new hardware. Personally I would do a 'clean' install, just to make sure I wasn't bringing any 'old' problems along. If the 'repair' install doesn't solve the problem you can always do a 'clean' install later.
