    Hi
We got my Grandson a new monitor for Christmas and it only lasted about a week then went dead.
This is a CRT monitor running on a old 98 HP computer. They said that the screen looked stretched, you could only see just the edge of the icons on the left side.
They shut down the computer and when it came back on the monitor kind of made a screeching sound then went black. The power light does not even come on.
Any ideas what may have caused this? Could someone have messed with any settings that could cause this? My Grandson is only 8 years old and likes to explore:eek: or was it just a bad monitor?
I will be taking it back to "Best Buy" this weekend, that is where I got it.
    Thanks
    Geri
FYI, Tested another monitor on it and it works fine.

Were you able to test the monitor on another pc?

"the monitor kind of made a screeching sound then went black" -> Sure sounds like it dies...

Hardware, if it is going to fail, it usually fails early in it's lifespan or goes on to run for what seems a long and healthy life (I have taken perfectly good monitors to the recyclers only because they are too old).

It is lucky that it may not have happened one day after the warranty ran out

If you get a replacement and if it comes with a drivers CD, run the drivers CD before you connect the new monitor. That will tell the computer what is the "standard" settings that should be run for that monitor.

Having a bad connection for the cables or running it well outside the monitors capabilities would be the only way you could possibly make it go ZZZZTTTTT :)
I don't think your grandson would have had any hand in it (they should be relatively "child-proof" :) )
