I purchased a new to me computer, and the person installed a dial up modem for me to go online. This computer will only stay online 10sec to a couple of minutes. I unhooked the new computer and hooked up the old one just to go online to figure out what is wrong. I'm not computer literate, so if you need more info. Let me know.

    Thank you, Kimberley

    Hello Kimberley,

You're going to have to go back to the person that installed the modem.

Any number of things could be wrong:

    The modem itself is bad.
    The modem needs drivers.
    The modem was installed incorrectly.
The wire to the outlet if not the same as the one you're using now could be bad.

    Regards - Charles

    Thank you Charles,

I bought the modem new 2 days ago. So I don't think thats it. He had a 10/100 ethernet card in the place where the modem is now. Could that be it? I went into the puter and the system says the modem is ok and not conflicted.
    Thanks,
    Kimberley

Although Windows may say that the modem is working properly in Device Manager that is not necessarily the case :)

You don't state your Operating System, but if it is XP go ....

Control Panel > Phone and Modem Options > Modem tab > highlight the modem if not already highlighted > Properties > Diagnostics > Query Modem.

If the modem is operating OK you will see a list of commands and responses in the lower pane of the dialogue box. Do you see this?

A long time since I used 98, but the procedure is similar.

Let us know the result of that test and we'll try and take it from there.
