    A new adventure for me.

I just bought a Wired Linksys Cable Modem today. I got it for two reasons.

#1 I hear and read that it works much better along with all the other Linksys hardware. The three NICs, the Switch and the Router are all Linksys.

It is capable of either Cat5 or USB. I would like to hear from anyone that has used USB.

But on the other hand why should I go to USB when I have all the cabling already installed. 3 PCs and a Printer going to a Switch. Then Switch going Router. Then Router to Modem.

Reason #2 is because I am getting bad connections or dropouts at times. Not on just one PC put all three. I had a real bad time getting a 17mb download the other night. ( RCA Modem I believe over two years old. )

Also the Cable Activity light on the Modem and the Internet light on the Router go out for a few seconds at a time. That is when pages also stop loading or the download hangs up..

We also had probelms when playing our Internet Golf the other night. The Friend in Canada said the he got the message the I had dropped out.

Now If I read correctly all I need to do is switch equipment and give my ISP a call and give them the new MAC address.

Sounds/reads as very simple. But time will tell.

BillyBob--I have had a Motorola USB 4100Surfboard modem for over two years. One of the reasons I got it was that all I had to do was plug it in. No NIC card connection, opening the tower, etc. Works perfectly still. (Hope it will tomorrow after that statement.) Can't remember about the MAC address connection, but I think you are correct, and it went smoothly.
Comcast has had a major outage where I live this afternoon and evening. Things are still a bit shaky, but it is not the modem's fault.
Why is this a major adventure, since it sounds like you have had cable for sometime?

    Thanks for the reply.

I would not say it is a major adventure just a new one. Because this will be the first time that I have done a Cable modem change myself.

You mention using USB and not having to open the case. But I do not have that to worry about cause I got all the NIC Hardware installed already for this and the other three machines.

BTW. My Wife just LOVES beating me at Cribbage or Bowling Via the LAN.

But after I get a couple of Doctors apointments to make sure Nancy is back in good health out of the way I will have a go at it.

    SUCCESS

    Modem changed.

I called my ISP first to just check on things. They took the new address.

    Switched equipment.

    Repowered and BINGO !!!!

So far thing seem to be MUCH better.

This BBS loads in about 1/2 the time it did before.

    PS
The toughest part of all was finding THE RIGHT CABLES and Power Supply to move/change.

    Almost unbelieveable

I am using this post as a sort of testing site.

Now that I have replaced the modem I am getting MUCH BETTER audio from places such as here.

Much clearer and DEFFINETLY faster download. And no background noise.

So. Is this saying that my old modem was dropping packets ? ( I think that is what it is called ) :(

If this is true then it should improve our Golf game behavior quite a bit.

Also it is great to see web page almost SNAP into place instead of getting half of a page and hanging for a few seconds.

I am also not getting hangups when I submit replys as I was getting.

I think my $70 investment and 15 minutes of work is going to be well worth it.

I just recieved more good news from a Niece who uses the 3rd machine for AIM.

She says " Much better "

Now I have to ask a favor.

Can someone please tell me the name of the song being played in the background of the link I pointed to ?
