    Hi All,

Several months ago, I upgraded my Win'98SE machine to an ASUS P4PE mobo and ASUS 8170DDR AGP card (and other minor upgrades). Before upgrading, I had my monitor set by DPMS to turn "off" after 15 mins of inactivity. At that point, the ONLY way the monitor would turn "on" was by moving the mouse or touching a key. :) Since upgrading, ANYthing causes the monitor to come full-awake: a program starting from scheduler, modem input, etc. I've tried just about everything I can think of to return the 'puter to pre-upgrade "normality" to no avail. This particular 'puter is in my bedroom, so it's like somone turning on the lights at 2 am! I've resorted to physically switching off the monitor, but would like to get back where I was. Any ideas?

Don't know what all you have tried, but it sounds like the Wake Up Calls in the BIOS are enabled.

Go into your BIOS, Power Management Setup and disable or turn off the PM Events listed. Should be something like:

    ***PM Events**
    VGA - Off

LPT & COM - LPT/COM [There is a setting of "NONE" for this but you might have to leave the LPT & COM active to wake up when you move the mouse or hit the keyboard.]

    HDD & FDD - Off
    DMA/master - Off
    Resume by Ring/LAN - Disable
    Resume by Alarm - Disable

The above are from my BIOS,

    Award Modular BIOS v4.51PG
    System BIOS Date 12/09/99

so yours may be somewhat different.

This is what my BIOS has available under the "POWER" menu item:

    • Power Management [User Defined] [Disabled] [Min Saving] [ Max Saving]
    • Video Off Option [Always On] [Suspend -> Off]
    • Video Off Method [Blank Screen] [V/H SYNC+Blank] [DPMS Standby] [DPMS Suspend] [DPMS OFF] [DPMS Reduce On]
    • HDD Power Down [Disabled] [1 Min] [2 Min] [3 Min]...[15 Min]
    • ACPI Suspend To RAM [Disabled] [ Enabled]
    • Suspend Mode [Disabled] [1~2 Min] [2~3 Min] [4~5 Min] [8~9 Min] [20 Min] [ 30 Min]
    • PWR Button < 4 Secs [Soft Off] [ Suspend]
    • ->Power Up Control
    • ->Hardware Monitor

And under the "Power Up Control" submenu:

    • AC Power Loss Restart [Disabled] [Enabled] [Previous State]
    • Wake/Power Up On Ext. Modem [Disabled] [Enabled]
    • Power Up On PCI Card: [Disabled] [Enabled]
    • Power On By PS/2 Keyboard: [Disabled] [Spacebar] [Ctrl-Esc] [Power Key]
    • Power On By PS/2 Mouse [Disabled][Enabled]
    • Automatic Power Up: [Disabled] [Everyday] [By Date]

Any ideas what I need here?

    Thanks!

Hi Russ: I can't see anything in the BIOS settings that would cause your problem. What O/S do you run, W98SE, W2K, XP?? Maybe something in the Control Panel, Power Management you can look at?

Perhaps someone else will have some ideas.

    Hi John,

I'm running '98SE. I changed out several hard parts at once, so t'shooting will not be easy... Think there could be something strange with the vid card (ASUS 8170DDR)? I didn't WANT to change my vid card, but the new MOBO would only support 1.5V and my old Diamond Viper would only run at 3.0V. This ASUS card keeps putting 2 monitors in the device tree, my Hitachi 751 & a "generic ". If I delete the generic monitor, windows always "finds it" again. Obviously, I only have 1 monitor.

What happens if you delete both monitors, reboot and let windows find the monitor again?

Sounds like there may be a conflict with the vid card and power management functions. Kinda getting beyond my depth here.

Just tried it - Winbloz "finds" them (both) on startup... My gut feeling is vid card, but I can't find anything specific in the manual about why I have 2 monitors.
