I just came from my local Best Buy and I was told that some of the newer laptops no longer come with recovery disks, you have to make your own. Has anyone else heard this?

My sister-in-law when she got a new HP desktop it did not have a recovery disk. She did not read the manual that came with it as it told how to make one. So when her system had a probelm she had to pay HP to ship her a recovery disk.

This caught me off guard as my current laptop is 4 years old and it came with more "stuff" than I needed...but the recovery disks I felt were indeed necessary. I downloaded a manual for the model in quesiton and see where it tells you how to create recovery disks.

Neither my desktop, or my laptop came with any disks.
    I had to make them.
Actually in both cases (both Compaqs) recovery disk maker program even didn't work, so I had to call HP, and they sent me free sets.

The recovery partition idea has been around for a few years now;)
It helps keep the prices down....

Dell will send you one when you order or you can get one later for either free or about 10 bucks.

HP has a recovery making option that works well. You only get one shot at it before it self destructs. We used it where/when I usta work, it takes it's sweet time, 6 or 7 CDs or 1 DVD, but it works well.

Sometimes, Recovery Discs are troublesome. I used the built-in Recovery partition. I think that new laptop has built-in recovery partitions as my mom's laptop has extra partition just for recovery - and it includes all drivers.

I only will buy a laptop if I get a full OS disk. For example Dell's small business offerings will give you the media.

If that wouldn't be an option I'd get the laptop without OS, and would buy an OEM disk from one of the retailers (such as Newegg).

as far as i know, for most laptops or pc's sold in the UK they don't come with recovery discs, but as previously noted by other posters you are able to make your own. You should find that most manufacturers have added a hidden partition on the laptop or pc which is normally accessed by pressing F10 or F11 on most systems and from here you can put the system back to default.

Oh. To answer the Thread maker, I never heard such thing that says "There are no more recovery discs" though I'll scout the computer makers such as Asus to spy them about this matter.
