    For no apparent reason, my new Dell laptop running Vista Home Premium no longer recongnizes my D:\ drive (DVD/CD-ROM).
    I can't play DVDs or CDs. Getting message "insert a disk" when I just put a brand new disk in. I've tried it with 5 different disks.
    Any suggestions as how to remedy this?

    Thanks!

    That error message isn't one I feel confident about defeating when I see it. :(

    Since it is a new computer, you may be best off contacting Dell Support. If you don't want to wait on the telephone, look at contacting them through the Support website:
    www.dell.com/support

    It is not possibility to swap the drive on a laptop like it is with a desktop.

    If it is a fault with with the hardware, Dell should rectify it under warranty, rather than us possibly leading you through dead-end troubleshooting suggestions.

    If they can fix it, but it happens again, then I might be able to help you :)

    Is the drive still showing up under Computer and in the device manager? If so, uninstall the driver through the device manager and delete the upperfilters and lowerfilters in the registry, at the following key:

    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Class\{4D36E965-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}

    Reboot the notebook after that, and try again. If that doesn't work, try a Windows system restore to a date before the drive stop working.

    Good luck!

    I did the system restore first thing. Notta.
    Yeah... I did all that via a Google search on the problem. Yes, the drive shows up in device manager and in My Computer. I have uninstalled the driver
    and rebooted.. and deleted the upper/lower filter entries in the registry. No luck.
    Thanks
