As a beginner I am stuck. I live in Portugal & have just bought a new system pre installed with XP Home in Portuguese which I do not want.
I have bought an OEM XP Pro set in English which I wish to install instead.

The computer has not been used or ever connected to the Internet.

Can I just install the new disc to automatically overwrite the existing system or do I need to remove the existing one first.

Sorry if this is a bit basic but as a beginner I do not want to make a costly mistake & ruin the system

    1. go to manufacturer Web site and download all drivers and also motherboard chipset drivers if available.
    2. put these drivers on a cd.
    3. put in xp cd.
    4. reboot.
    5. get rid of existing installation & install xp.
    6. at first boot install any needed drivers beginning w/ mb chipset drivers.

  3. to hide this advert.

    Jeeze No!

Do not delete the existing install. You will lose all pre installed software if any like Office etc. Requiring reinstalling them also

You say you prefer english. Does that mean you can read Portuguese. If not get someone who can to help you with the below.

It is better to have XP Pro anyway so just upgrade.

    1. Boot to desktop in Portuguese.

    2. insert XP Pro install CD

    3. it should autorun. I will say something like "This is a newer version" do you want to upgrade or install a new windows etc.

3a. If it does not autorun then browse to the CD drive and chose setup.

    4. Chose upgrade.

    5. Install always prompts for the time zone and language/keboard.

    6. Chose English.

    WA La,

XP Pro English and you kept all pre installed apps, of which some are probably junk that can be un-installed.

    Report back results.
