I have an external Maxtor 1TB OneTouch disk drive that can no longer be initialized. The error message, after reinstalling the driver and trying to initialize, says that it is write protected.

Can I install a new drive - Maxtor or not - in the same Enclosure?

Short answer is if you can open the enclosure without causing damage, yes. If you post the model number of the maxtor we'll even be able to say which type ;).

However, you could try seatools to diagnose the fault and perhaps revive your current drive.

Some of the newer externals or not even not to that new are not that simple when it comes to swapping in drives
Perhaps they realized people were buying the drives on sale to remove the drives and get an enclosure in the mix
Some of them use proprietary software for setup
Its not as easy as it once was
You may have to get an install disc
Otherwise it might be fairly easy
    Good luck

Link for information? An enclosure is just that. What disruptive measures could they use?

Wildfire, the model number is STM310004OTA3E5-RK. Unfortunately, my Win 7 system can no longer see/initiate the drive. Hence SeaTools is not an option. Since Maxtor OneTouch 4 Plus has built in software for 1-touch update, I am not sure how to proceed except just to take it apart and install a new drive. That would be my next step if no one has experience with same and can offer any advice. I have not been successful in contacting Maxtor/Seagate tech support.

Visionoff, You're right about proprietary software. I have a fully operational Seagate Free AgentGo which comes with drivers for Windows 32bit OS. I am running Win 7 64 bit. In order to get another driver for 64 bits OS, I was requested to send their tech services an email requesting same which I did on Monday. I have not heard back as yet.
