    Hello again all
I just purchased a Gateway Gt5235E Desk top and it has a problem I went to Gateway but still have the problem. The modem is very slow I get anywhere from a 1.1 to 19.5 kbps when I try to logon to my dial-up. Please before anyone tries to say anything about dial-up it is the only thing we can get without paying longdistance charges. With that I also have an old desktop that I am now useing to write this when I go online with this one I get 46.6kbps and this is the same phone line.
The nwe pc is a gateway GT5235E it has a AMD Athlon tm 64x2 Processor 3800+ Dual-Core 64 bit Processor with AMD 64 Technology , 2.0 Ghz. 2x512 KB L2 Cache, 2000 MHz System Bus.
    nVidia Geforce 6100 1GB ram 1028 MB memory , modem 56K ITU V .92 Ready Fax /Modem .
I have tried everything I can think of and can not get it to go faster. Could there be a file missing .
Please help I would like to us it Someday.
The one I am writing this from I a gateway Performance 1300 pc with an Intel 1300MHz (1.3GHz) Pentium 4 Processor.

    Hi, jabfarm. :)

When experimenting with modem settings, I suggest you keep careful track of changes you make so you can reverse them if necessary.

    1. Hold down your Windows key and press the Pause/Break key.
(This will open your "System Properties" window.)
    2. Click the Hardware tab.
    3. Click the Device Manager button.
(While in Device Manager, if you notice any question mark icons or exclamation point icons, then note what they are flagging and report back to us with details.)
    4. Expand the "Modems" item by clicking on the "+" next to it.
    5. Click your right mouse button on your modem, and select "Properties ".
    6. Please note any details about your modem under the tabs in that window and report back.

You might see a "Maximum Port Speed" setting. The "Maximum Port Speed" for my external U.S.Robotics 56K Fax/Modem is 115200 bps (115.2K)...and I normally get 49.3K-50.6K connections to my dial-up ISP.

This Maximum Port Speed is the data transfer rate between your computer and the modem (DTE) which should be faster than the rate between your modem and your ISP so it can "keep up" with data transfer to/from your ISP.

    ==========

Another location to view/experiment with settings regarding your dial-up connections is by clicking
Start > Control Panel > Network Connections

Right-click your dial-up account name and select "Properties ".

I have included screen shots of my dial-up modem's settings in my dial-up account's "Properties" window you may want to compare with. Click on the thumbnails below to view my settings.

NOTE: If you are using the Firefox web browser, you might notice your mouse cursor changes to a magnifying glass when you hover it over the image. This is because Firefox automatically resizes images to fit in the browser window. Click left mouse button to magnify the image to normal size.

But for me to check anything out it will have to wait until I get home from work.
But thank you for the info.

Gateway should have given you a drivers CD with the computer. Put that in and install the drivers for the modem.

If that does not improve the situation, go to Control Panel -> Phone and Modems Options -> Modems tab, highlight the modem and click Remove. If the correct drivers have been installed, when you restart the computer, it will automatically install the drivers. If the correct drivers cannot be found, direct the Add New Hardware wizard to the drivers CD. If you find any problems during the Add New Hardware wizard, click Cancel, then run the drivers CD and install the modem.

Does the ISP have an installation CD (not that the connection should be "special ")? Is there any connection setup instructions at the ISP's website?

Try contacting the ISP's technical department.

    Matt

Hi everyone I tried what mailman told me and I still had the problem. So I just purchased a new US ROBOTICS 56K USB FAXMODEM and boy what a change now this pc runs like it should.
As for getting a cd none came with it. this was from a retailer not right from Gateway. I wont ever do that again. I see it is true you get what you pay for.
But thanks to everyone for your help.
More people should know that when you come to Windowsbbs.com you get helped. Thanks again

    You're very welcome! :)

Glad you got your problem solved.

I was thinking your modem might be flaky and I think your choice of modem brand is very wise. :) USRobotics (now 3com) has been in the dial-up modem business for a long time and their modems have (or at least had) a reputation for being pretty stable/reliable. Back in the old dial-up BBS days, the USRobotics "Courier" model was the modem to use for running a BBS (according to friends of mine who used to run BBS's).

I expect 3com continues to use the "USRobotics" label due to the excellent reputation the USRobotics name has garnered.

    Good luck!
