Okay, I want to replace an old motherboard and install a new HD in my working computer. What would be the best and most error avoiding way to proceed to minimize data and application loss?

A new HD is relatively easy. You just clone the old hard disk to the new one & Windows shouldn't notice.

A new motherboard is altogether a different thing. Depending on the CPU you may or may not be able to find a replacement. That replacement may or may no work with Windows straight out of the box.

A new motherboard may also require new RAM, in addition to a new CPU since it is likely your old motherboard uses older technologies. And a new motherboard is considered a new computer for software licensing purposes so typically a new motherboard requires a new Windows license as well.
