I'm about to order a new computer this coming friday. It will have 500GB of hardrive and come with vista. Could anyone recommend if I should partition the hardrive before I migrate my old computer into the new one first. Or what? Any other advice would be greatly appreciated. It's been a while since I've been able to get a new computer. OH I'm getting the HP Pavilion Media Center TV m8200n.

Do you want to make extra partitions, rather than just having one big C: drive? Otherwise you won't gain anything by removing the partition.

If you want to make more partitions, in Vista, you can "shrink" the C: drive and create extra partitions in the free space. You can read about it in Help and Support.

You can transfer your settings using the File and Settings Transfer Wizard. I prefer to transfer files without using the wizard.

If you have used multiple partitions before, you will probably have a basic plan for how many and what size to make them. You will probably find people here that will give you some suggestions if you need them. For example, I use one partition/drive for putting temporary files that cause fragmentation when they are added and removed.

Check for demonstration and trial programs that you probably won't keep. Uninstall them as soon as you can. For example, it will have a trial antivirus or internet security suite. If you are going to use your own, uninstall theirs.

Let us know more details about your plans.
