It's been so long since I had a new computer, I've sort of forgotten what it's like. Anyway, mine (an HP Pavillion) when activated and even at rest from time to time, grinds or spins a bit. About once every ten minutes I can hear a slight spinning noise (not loud... but audible). At other times you can sometimes see the light indicating activity is ongoing and hear a slight grinding noise as though it is processing something. It's not loud and I'm sure I'll adapt but initially I thought it would be quiet. Is this normal?

    HP Pavilion a720n

    Thanks

    James,

    Yes.

Windows is constantly running subroutines (little programs) in the background. These are called threads by Norton (symantec) and at present my computer has 371 running. Most are just waiting to be helpful, but a lot are doing periodic housekeeping tasks and those are the ones you hear..
