I'm upgrading my home computer. I've been running Netscape 7.1 under Windows XP Home Edition. I intend to download the current version of Netscape to my new computer to run under Windows XP Professional. I would appreciate some advice on how to transfer my existing email archives between machines and between Netscape versions. So far I haven't even been able to find current versions of my mailboxes on my existing machine (I'm not really knowledgeable on applications at this level).

Regards and thanks for the assistance.

    Welcome to the Forum, lawhern!

    lawhern,

If you plan to upgrade Netscape 7.1 to 7.2, I would strongly recommend that you consider either Mozilla 1.7.12, or Firefox 1.0.7 (browser) and Thunderbird 1.0.7 (Mail Client). Netscape 7.x is now obsolete, and both 7.1 and 7.2 have serious bugs, in addition to security problems.

Mozilla 1.7.12 is a suite, like Netscape 7.1, and you will see little to no difference in the operation of the browser and mail component. Netscape 7.1 is based on Mozilla 1.4, and is almost identical with two exceptions: 1) You can't access AOL/Netscape Webmail from within the mail component. 2) No proprietary AOL features, i.e., AIM/NIM. You can use the same Profile that you are now using with Netscape 7.1.

You can download Mozilla here: http://www.mozilla.org/releases/
Read the Release Notes, as they contain a wealth of information.

Your Profiles folder, which contains your Mail Accounts, is located here:
    C:\Documents and Settings\user_name\Application Data\Mozilla\Profiles\profile_name\*.slt\Mail\pop.isp.net

NOTE: These files are hidden by default.
    To see hidden files:
    1. On the Tools menu in Windows Explorer, click Folder Options
    2. Click the View tab
    3. Under Hidden files and folders, click Show hidden files and folders
    4. Disable "Hide File Extensions for Known Files. "
    5. Click OK.

To search for files in the Application Data folder, go to Start | Search.
Under More Advanced Options select Search system folders, Search
Hidden Files and folders, and Search subfolders.

Let us know what you decide and we can continue from there.

    an addtional comment

Should you want to get @netscape.net (Webmail) in Mozilla, Thunderbird, or any other mail client, AFAIK, there is freePOPs , an utility which allows you get traditional webmails as POP accounts. In fact, I have set up one of my Netscape Webmail accounts, plus Yahoo and Lycos, in Mozilla and Thunderbird. The plus is that such mail is not removed until you decide to, unlike the website, where AOL wipes out everything every 10 days.
I am not checking my other account which is getting nothing but spam. so much for the Webmail spam controls.
    Good luck!

    Ramona,

I've used Firefox as a browser on my laptop at work. It seems to have a few disadvantages, though nothing crippling. I found that MSN seems to disable rich text display for Hotmail when Firefox is the browser employed. I have learned from another bulletin board (or at least I've been told -- we'll see how much I've learned after I try all of this out ) how to locate and re-load mailbox files from one computer to another in Netscape. So I guess the next logical question is whether mailbox transfer to my new machine will work similarly. Will Firefox or Mozilla recognize the Netscape mailbox formats?

FYI, the movers will pack my computer on Tuesday. So if I'm gone from the Board, I mean nobody any discourtesy of silence.

Thanks for the suggestions so far.

The Netscape files are of the same format, but Hotmail is Hotmail everywhere (not IE-compatible). I do use Hotmail, so I don't know how much it has been changed, but Hotmail is a Webmail, and, as such it would not be in your mail client, unless, of course, you have Hotmail set up with a program like freePOPs. Then, you can set the display any way you want it.
Of course, we are talking about mail, and Firefox has no more mail than IE. The Mozilla suite has mail.
