    Hi All,

Just did a total fresh install of XP SP2 on a Acer Travelmate 370.

On the first reboot noticed on the first screen (Windows XP logo - black background with the cylinder and a blue scroll going thru it) took over 2 minutes to get to windows, yet there was nothing installed at that time.

However, tried a few more re-boots without nothing installed and the same thing. Noticed during this 2 minute or so wait, there was NO HD activity on the LED.

Continued to install a few programs and really nothing has changed. Still takes too long as far as I can see to get from the time its switched on to the time it gets to the 'desktop'.

Anyone has any idea what could be causing this delay?

    cheers

Hi Maco88. Try updating the system to Service Pack 3 and make sure you are using the latest drivers for all your hardware. See if there is any change.

I do find it strange. Is this the first time you have done a fresh install on that computer? Maybe Windows XP is conflicting with an installed driver or some other hardware device.

Actually to cut a long story short, its a friends notebook (Acer Travelmate 370). They (him and his family) are not so computer savvy, wouldn't know how to re-install windows, so I helped them out.

They had XP on there before, but said the kids managed to infect it with virus/trojans by going to some bad sites (who knows?)

Anyway, I did notice the notebook boot up very slowly even before I re-installed windows XP.. figure it would nice and clean for a fresh install.

Did that, and this is the problem now. The shutdown seems fine, but the screen it stays stagnant on that I mention in my original post is the problem.

Thats what gets me. A clean XP system with nothing on it to take over 2 minutes to boot up????

    Hi Maco88,

When you say "clean install ", I trust you completely re-formatted (and\or partitioned) the drive, set it to NTSF, etc., right?

You might want to go to Black Viper and see if there's any tweaks that might help.

Or, there's a nifty little utility called Tune XP that may help, too.

You could try going into the computers BIOS and check to see if there is a fast boot option or a quick POST feature. Some computer BIOS's have those options. You could also try Disabling Windows Services.

jp, yes did all that as you mentioned in your post. Will have a look at those utilities but i hold little hope they would help.

Evan, looked at the BIOS but all seems normal, nothing there of any option for a quick boot.

The only thing i can think of is this is quite normal for this model Acer.

    Hi Maco88,

Please, try the two utilities I posted. Getting rid of all the crud, excess startup, etc., (and a registry tweak I'll share after you've run the above). I've run them and now my computer boots in 48 seconds and shuts down in 8 to 9 seconds.

    Please, post some computer info:
    - processor type, amount of RAM (hold Windows logo key, hit Pause/Break key)
    - hard drive size/free space (open "My Computer ", right click on hard drive letter, click "Properties ")
    - security programs in use (antivirus, firewall)

    hi Guys

    found the problem.

Was an 32MB ATA Flash card inserted. Tried booting without it and bingo.. loaded up in 5 seconds.

Thanks for all your help, just one thing I didn't think of until i noticed it.
