    Hi Everyone,

I just replaced an old Teac 512E cd drive with a new Mad Dog 52x CD-RW drive. Love it (didn't realize what I was missing not having a burner) but its caused a problem. Every time I reboot the system, the DOS screen comes up and gives me a Warning-Error 0271-check date/time setting requiring me to push F2 before Win98SE starts booting. I've gone into the BIOS and reset the date/time and also reset the date/time through the taskbar, but the problem continues. Has anybody ever seen or heard of this situation, and if so, any links, fixes, etc.? Thanks in advance for any suggestions. (if I have to live with this in order to keep the new drive, I'm willing, but it is an annoyance)

Let's hope it is the easy fix ...
The cmos battery needs to be changed.
This will be found on the mother board. Looking for something round and silver, about the size (diameter) of a quarter. Computer should be off and pull the power cord out of the wall outlet. They are easy to replace. Just sit and look at the battery holder. May have a spring type lock, over center collar, or possible a very small s c r e w.

    Battery???

    Thanks Dennis,

I'll try the battery. I assume I can get a replacement at Radio Shack, Best Buy, or Office Depot. I never realized there was a battery on the motherboard!!! Wonder if more power demanded from the new CD-RW drive sapped it? I'll get back to you after I try the fix.

They are a normal item of replacement. If you get a good fresh battery, should expect 5 years plus of service (motherboard recharges battery). Adding any amount of devices will have no effect on the battery life. It supplies power to the cmos chip to hold settings (in memory) when the computer is turned off.

Envirossf: Before you pull the battery, go into the BIOS and write down all the settings as they will probably be lost when you take out the battery. You will still be able to start your computer but settings will be at factory default and you may have to redo to what you had.

Always a good idea, can never have to much backup info. Keep in mind, if problem is caused by failing battery, you are already using default settings.

    Battery???

    Thanks Everyone,

I pulled out the old CMOS battery, (hidden behind the disk drive) and replaced it. I reset the date/time in the Bios and rebooted. Shut down and restarted. Problem solved!! Booted like it should, no error messages. I appreciate all the advice/help/suggestions offered.
