I have Win 7, and my old Samsung SATA CD ROM is acting up (drawer issues). I brought an older HP drive (TS-H653R) home from work (SATA, too) . I shut the desktop down, swapped the drives and powered up. Device Mgr recognizes the driver and says it is working properly, but it is not reading. Tried to update drivers and says they are up to date. Never did show a new hardware detected message. Drive shows empty with both a silver audio disc and software disc in it. Ran troubleshooter and it came back with an issue with the Tunneling Teredo adapter. Its driver says it is up to date, though. Windows could not fix it. Not sure if that matters as it probably existed with the old drive, too (which would work once I got the drawer to open).

No idea where to go from here. Thanks.

    Thanks!
Nothing really there. It is recognized in Device Mgr for one thing. There is a registry add, if missing (which it is)
"reg.exe add "HKLM\System\CurrentControlSet\Services\atapi\Controller0" /f /v EnumDevice1 /t REG_DWORD /d 0x00000001". However this is under an Atapi folder and that is like IDE, right? This is a SATA drive. Is it still applicable? Rmember, the old drive worked fine except tor the drawer mechanism.

LarryB, does your CD ROM show in Disc Management?
Does it have an allocated Alpha? eg. D:
If you Right click in the area where it shows the CD-ROM, does it open a menu with 4 parameters?
    Does it show "Eject"?
If so, clicking on that should Open the CD drawer which would indicate that the driver is installed and that the CD-ROM is working.

Have you seen this Microsoft article?
    https://support.microsoft.com/en-us...programs-64da3690-4c1d-ef04-63b8-cf9cc38ca53e

Also, what type of CDare you using?
The CD must be compatible with the drive. For example, many older drives cannot read CDRW disks and CDR disks. And if the drive does support reading CDRWs or CDRs the CDs must be in range (2x, 4x, 16x, 48x, etc).

I've had CDROMs that could read music CDs but not read CDR or CDRW.

Darnit, I just cleaned out my "tech storage" room and threw out a half dozen CDRW and DVDRW drives!

    Thanks for the input.

    Tony, using std silver discs.

RT- The drive shows as the E: drive on the "Computer" page and the right click menu shows many things, including "Eject", which works.

However, when I went into Disk Management, the page would not populate.... constantly "connecting to Virtual Disk Connection". Weird. Services showed that it was on Manual, so I changed it to Automatic and rebooted. Disk Management shows drive in beige at the very bottom (no media). That and drivers look the same as my existing and reading CD ROM.

    Maybe its just defective??

BTW- You two guys have saved my arse many times. Thanks again!!!

Retail silver audio and software discs were used and were not able to be read.

I opened it up and the lens looks pristine. I did wipe a lint-free cloth over it anyway.
Would the Region Zone matter on an audio disc??

    It is appropriately Region 1.

That maybe the answer. There was obviously a driver problem and MS ran the fix but, MS no longer support W7.

I am game! I will first do a registry backup, of course. Could making these deletions cause my "working" drive inoperable, too? I understand that a System Restore point also backs up the registry. I have always found the restore point process to be a little unreliable. A great idea, subject to the whims of Windows finikiness when trying to restore ("restore failed.....").

I took a look and it does contain only the Upper Filters entry which specifies the "GEARAspiWDM" driver. This driver is shown on both the old and new cd-rom driver lists in Properties.

Larry, I just dug out a DVD called "Ultimate Driver DVD" for Windows 32 & 64bit XP, Vista & W7 Desktop and Laptop compatible.
I have used this many times in the past when I was building comps from 2nd hand parts.
It helped when I didn't have access to the original drivers.
This disc is allowed to Autorun and it will do a scan and then advise what drivers need to be installed or updated.
    The company to contact: www.rightclickcc.com
I actually purchased mine on our Trademe site here in NZ.
I don't know whether Ebay may have them or whether they are now history.

Great idea but nowhere to be found and the website is gone, too.
Any referrals to a safe driver website? Lots of them out there but I don't trust any of them. I found that this is a rebadged Toshiba/Samsung so I am searching anew!!
