Use the MajorGeeks mirror - that's the download of the setup file. The one on Cnet downloads is an "upgrade" in place which replaces the current 6.0 version.

In the install, you will be asked whether or not to uninstall the current version, I would recommend not doing so. You can compare the current version with the new one. The current version (6.0) is still being updated - there is a ref file update for today. EDIT: May not be - last ref date is 08/06

What the SE install will do is replace the current Ad-Aware shortcut - so before insalling the new, rename the current 6.0's shortcut to something else - just need to change it by one character.

    Regards - Charles

charlesvar: I downloaded Ad-aware SE a few minutes ago without first deleting my existing version, 6.0, as you recommended. The download and install seemed quick and easy. I then ran a system scan, and part way through the scan a Norton AV window popped up and informed me that it had just caught and isolated a Trojan Horse it called Trojan.ByteVerify. Anyone else having that experience?

The scan found 9 new Critical Objects, 6 of them tracking cookies (Data Miners) and 3 of them Possible Browser Hijack attempts. I'd run a scan only yesterday, so I'm wondering if these 9 findings had already worked their way into my system before the download or if the SE version caught something that 6.0 hadn't.

I just got it, installed it (and the thing demands to go into program files regardless of where I set it to load) and ran it. Found a few nasties for me and got rid of them.

No problems like you had with that trojan Bobbo.

    Hi Christer,

The download page of Lavasoft - 2nd page - has changed since I posted. The language for Cnet was different - "full update" - and when I started the download, wasn't asked to allow a download to the drive. That's what made me think it was a direct upgrade over the old one.

And compared files sizes - the Cnet stated download size is 1.61 MB while the one from MajorGeeks is 2.49 MB.

    Regards - Charles

    Charles,

My install from MajorGeeks came down as 2,552 Kb this morning - maybe it's now zipped?- they all show 1.61Mb now - and the installer advised against leaving v6 installed.

Just hope they reinstate their configure tutorial ASAP - was at http://www.lavahelp.com/howto/fullscan/index.html, but the link is dead.

Yes, I noticed that too but isn't that the size of the previous version, making it a miss in editing?

I have compared the two versions and noticed that the default settings have changed. In SE, IE Favorites are scanned for banned URLs and My Hosts File is scanned by default. I configured 6.0 the same and ran both in sequence, 6.0 first. SE found a few more tracking cookies.

On consecutive runs they only found my "about blank" homepage (which makes me a browser hijacker ...... ;) ......)

SE is very much faster, approximately five times. 6.0 took 106 seconds to scan 46166 objects compared to SE which took 22 seconds to scan 46377 objects.

SE has a more recent definitions file.

    Christer

    EDITED:

I have both versions installed with no problems. I don't have any desktop shortcuts but it seems like the SE version has new names.

Had the same experience as far as speed goes, pleasently supprised. It uses more memory to do that.

    Hi Pete,

In the properties window for the setup file, that 2,552 Kb is the size on disk as opposed to the first size above it.

I think Lavasoft is scrambling to change their pages - I already noticed a change from last night to this morning.

    Regards - Charles

Anyone looking at this thread, I think can dispense with v6.0

Installed SE on my 9X and allowed the SE installer to uninstall v6.0 which went cleanly. Allow it to uninstall any Plug-ins as well, the old ones are useless for the SE version.

One problem - an old false Positive has come back.

Anyone running ScriptSentry will get a Reg Data registry item:

    "regfile\shell\open\command " " (C\program file\script sec" and calls it a "possible virus infection, REG file compromised "

    Regards - Charles
