I am trying to lan 2 computers, one with xp and one with win98. After installing all equipment and running network wizard on the xp computer, i made the networking diskette for the win98 computer. I ran the diskette on the win98 computer and it installed and rebooted. On startup it says it can't continue because it can't find the ethernet hardware. The hardware is visible in the control panel/system/device manager and shows working properly. Any thoughts?

Also if I turn off the win98 computer the xp computer show the the lan was disconnected and vise versa when I turn it on. But I cannot see each computer from the other computer.

k9spinner - I've noticed from other folks posting that the XP "build-a-disk" works fine for other XP systems but often not well at all on any of the 9x systems.

If you can see your 98 network card, probably easier to do a manual setup. Fairly simple.

    - TCP/IP installed.
    - Use an IP address that is close but not identical to the XP one. Just a slight difference in the last octet (last set of numbers) and any is fine as long as no other machine has it, it isn't zero or 255.
    - Use the same subnet mask.
    - Give the 98 PC a name that is 8-10 characters, all alhpa/numerics and no spaces.
    - Put them in the same workgroup.
    - Run file & printer sharing on the 98 PC and make sure to share at least one folder.

You will need to be logging on to the 98 PC. And the XP PC will either need to have that exact username/password set up as a user or you will need to have the XP "Guest" account active. The default on XP-home is that way but XP-pro has it disabled by default as do 2K and NT4.

If you are going to be using ICS or a broadband router for connecting both PCs to the internet, there are a couple other things you will need to do.

The problem you're encountering is fairly simple to correct.
First, the disk you're making assumes a certain type of network, depending on how the XP box is set up. If the network type is NOT what you actually have, then the network diskette won't go, as you've found out. Rerun the network wizard, and make sure you select the correct type of network that you have, then the diskette will work.
If you're unsure what type of network it is, click on the examples in the wizard.
    It's not rocket science ;)
