Printer works great on the network and the scanner is on Windows 98 machine with the printer. I am trying to scan from a Windows XP Home edition machine on the network. Error message says that the scanner is in use or delete the scan job. Nothing is listed or being used on the scanner. I can access the shared files on both machines with no problem.
    Thanks
    Larry

Most scanners will not network share like a printer will. Even most of the all-in-one devices where the printer, scanner, copier are the same device only allow sharing of the printer portion over the network.

Exactly what scanner model do you have?

The scanner I have is a HP 5370c.......HP did send an answer back stating:
    Dear Larry,

HP does not recommend connecting your scanner to a printer or a network.
To use your scanner without any errors, please connect it directly to a
USB or Parallel port on your PC.

You also need to first verify the version of the scanning software that
you are using. You will need to use version 3.04 or later of the
Precisionscan scanning software for your scanner to work correctly on
    Windows XP.

If you do not have this software, you can obtain it by downloading it
from the HP Web site. The drivers for your scanner can be downloaded
free of charge from our Web site. Please click on the link given below
to download the Windows XP compatible software for your scanner:

    http://h20015.www2.hp.com/en/softwa...664en&prodId=hpscanjet519276&lc=en&sw_lang=en

NOTE: Clicking the link may give an error indicating it is
invalid. If this occurs, copy the portion of the address
on the remaining line(s) and paste it at the end of the
address showing in your browser until the complete address
is displayed in the Address box.

If you still receive the error message, please answer the following
question to have all of the details in one message. This information
will help us more accurately identify the issues at hand, and allow us
to give you a more thorough response.

    * Which cable is in use? (Parallel or USB)

This should resolve the issue. If you need further assistance, please
    reply to this message.

    Sincerely,
    Deepak

I posted thier reply as it might help some one else....

Does this sound like a plan or is it just to get rid of me.
