OK, I was brought an HP Pavilion dv6000 laptop. The guy said that the wireless quit working. I tried several solutions, including USB wireless adapters....well cut to the chase, I finally got it going with an updated driver. But the kicker is the wired connection doesn't work.....wireless, YES working great.

The wired connection is not acquiring an IP from the router (giving me a 169.xxx.xxx.xxxx)...yes the router works, I'm on a wired connection right now, and three other wired connections are working, even the one that the laptop won't . So it's not the router.

Device manager says the device is working properly, but it obviously isn't receiving the IP. I've tried downloading the new driver from HP, but the one on the computer is the same one, dated 2007, but it's the latest one I could find.

This computer did not have Win 7 on it originally, so that may be some of the issue.

Anyone have any ideas how to get the wired adapter working?

First, have you checked that the network adapter is enabled?

Assuming that's ok, can you check if you're being allocated an IP address.

Go to Network Sharing Center > Change adapter settings > (Highlight the adapter) View Status of this connection > Details.

There should be a value alongside IPv4 Address. Let us know if you are being allocated an IP address. BTW, your network IP address should be 192.168.xxx.xx not 169.xxx

Yes, it is enabled.....no, an IP is not being issued....on this computer. Plug same cable into another computer....works fine.

Yes, I know what the IP should look like, but it is not seeing it.

169.x.x.x is the address block used by the Windows operating system when the adapter does not connect to the LAN. This is because a computer MUST have an IP address if an adapter is enabled.

I would access the adapter properties and:

    1. uninstall QoS
    2. uncheck TCP/IP 6 if have Windows 7.

If have Vista or Windows 7, use the "Connect to" link via the start menu. If have Windows 7, and the adapter has never been connected to the LAN, it won't connect until you tell it to connect.

As I recall, the dv6000 came with XP Media Center operating system or Vista.
