I have two PCs networked via a crossover UTP cable. One
runs 98SE, the other XP Pro. The network works fine with
file sharing in both directions, printer sharing and
Internet Connection Sharing. However, I have recently
started getting an error message pop-up when I attempt to
access a shared drive or folder on the 98SE PC from the XP
PC that says "The drive or network connection that the
shortcut 'target.lnk' refers to is unavailable. Make sure
that the disk is properly inserted or the network resource
is available, and then try again." I click on the Ok
button in the message window and everything is working
fine. Why does this error message keep popping-up when
there is no problem? How can I stop it popping-up?

Get rid of, or fix, the shortcut 'target.lnk'.

It may point to a mapped network drive you no longer have mapped or something similar but for whatever reason, it's now invalid and the system is just warning you about it.
