    Hi,
I'm running windows 7 ultimate and need information to set up streaming and downloading.
My network is WIRED and I've set up a server that has movie Avi files stored on it. I want to
have several friends log into this server and download files. Also what is needed for them to
stream these movies? I am a novice at this and have no idea how to accomplish these needs.
Any help (Simpler the better) will be greatly appriecated.
    TIA,
    ramjet

    ramjet,

First of all don't ever give out your email id unless you are very fond of spam.

What kind of server are we talking about? Where are your friends situated ? Within LAN or internet ?

    sharing and streaming

    Rsinfo,
Thanks for tip on email and spam.
I am running a "unraid" server which works fine on my wired network
for file transferring (Haven't tried streaming yet..Don't know how).
This will be for internet use.(only 2 computers and server on the wired).
I've read til my eyes bleed but don't understand "port fordwarding ect ".
    Thanks.

Your going to have to learn networking. I suggest either/or a book or a basic college class. Your going to have to learn what port forwarding is, along with things like how to get through a router (if your using one), login and user security, how to optimize your intranet for optimal performance, esp. with multiple users, etc.

Ramjet, with the limited info with us we may not be in position to help you. We require much more info like type of internet connection, firewall/router brand etc.

As already pointed out by pweegar, you need to understand basic networking.

An unRaid server is a sort of NAS (network attached storage) device. It has its own operating system, usually linux or unix based. It will have certain services used for streaming files and this service will use certain ports.

For example, the streaming service may be using TCP port xxxx and UDP port yyyy.

To have users access the server from the WAN (Internet) you must config your router to forward requests for those ports to the LAN IP address of the unRaid server.

Then your friends can access the server using their Web browser with this address:

    xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx:xxxx or xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx:yyyy

where xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx = your ISP assigned IP address and where xxxx or yyyy = the port used by the streaming service..

The best solution I could think of for downloading was to turn your server into FTP server & grant rights to your friends on it. Your friends could then ftp into it & download files. Much secure than turning your server into web server & easier too.

Regarding streaming services, TonyT has already outlined the basic steps above.
