Hello, I have Windows 7 installed on both my Laptop and Desktop computer. Both computers have internet access, however the desktop computer is connected to the internet with wires coming from the router and the laptop has wireless access from the router. I was trying to share files and make a homenetwork so I didn't have to have both computers side by side or use jump-drives to moves files back and forth. I tried looking on the internet but came up empty. I don't know if I didn't use the correct search words or whatever but I'm stuck now. I'm not even sure that its possible to make a network between these two computers. Please help. Thank you.

    Welcome to the windowsBBS

I have XP, but the procedure should be the same.

Use windows explorer and click on the folder that you want to make available on the other computer. Then right-click on it and select properties then Sharing.

Click on “ share this folder on the network”

Click apply and OK and it should work

Everytime I click on Properties, then Sharing tab and Share, it asks me for the name of the computer I want to share with. When I put the name in I get, "Windows was unable to find XYZ "

Open "Help and support" on the Start Menu on the Windows 7 computer.

In the window that opens, type "Networking" (without the quotes) in the Search Help field, press the Enter key (or click the magnifying glass to the right of where you typed).

There is a lot of information on, first, how to set up your home network and, second, how to share files across that network.

I had searched that but couldn't find the answer I needed. I really just need to know if its possible to make a network on a desktop that is wired directly to the internet and a laptop that is wireless coming from the same router the desktop is on. On the Help and Support feature it gives the wireless option but then says that both computers need a Wireless network adapter. I don't understand though, why, if two computers are on the same internet connection, the laptop can't be accessed by the desktop through the router. It seems pretty simple to me but that may also be because I don't understand the ins and outs of everything.

Yes - I connect my laptop or netbook wirelessly outside of my home office or via a CAT cable if it is in the office.

    Setting up a home network

Add a device or computer to a network

As networking is not my area of expertise I will leave it to the Networking gurus to assist further :)

Since both computers run Windows 7, the easy way is to set up a Homegroup. See Home sweet homegroup
