Should be easy enough to get fixed. The fact that it was working eliminated lots of messy and bad possiblilties. And the following will all be in "layman ". :D

Unplug and replug your network cables. That may fix the problem. If not -

The first thing I always suggest with any 95/98 PC problem when it suddenly starts doing strange stuff is a complete cleanup. 9X can just get so jumbled it suddenly loses it's mind. Cleanup as follows (and do all the things to both PCs):

    1. Close all running probgrams then open the browser and delete all temporary internet files and cookies. Then close the browser.

    2. Open windows explorer and delete all the files in your temp folder. You will get warning messages about things you can't do if you remove certain files. Delete em anyway.

    3. Check c: for files with a pattern of filennnn.chk (where nnnn is any number) and delete any you find. There may be none or may be hundreds. Then close windows explorer.

    4. CTRL-ALT-DEL (CAD) to bring up the End Task window and end all tasks you find except explore and systray. Leave those running. You will probably have to CAD for each thing you want to stop and some can take a few seconds.

    5. Start~programs~accessories~system tools~scandisk (or whatever it is called on 98) and set it do scan your C: drive. Do a standard scan and check the box to fix all errors. Close scandisk.

    6. Start~programs~~accessories~system tools~disk defragmenter (or whatever it is called) and defragment C:. It will probably tell you the drive is only 0% or 2% fragmented or something. Do it anyway 'cause this particular message is simply not accurate.

    7. Reboot and see how it is working.

If the cleanup didn't fix things it will at least have given you a system that runs a little better. Post back with some information and we can get into specific networking troubleshooting.

You don't say but it sounds from your use of the word "host" that you are running ICS or some other modem sharing program. Are you and if so, which one?

    - are you running TCP/IP? Hopefully yes since it has lots of good diagnostic tools built in. If you are

    - start~run~winipcfg and click the button for details (can't remember the exact label). Then copy down ALL the information and post it back. Both PCs. Call one of them host and the other client when you post the data.
