I have a client with a network consisting of a Linksys WRT54G router, a desktop running XPP and a laptop running Vista Business. The internet connection is a wireless service (not DSL) with a Dynamic DHCP connection.

The desktop is wired to the router and the laptop is wireless. There is no security set up on the router – Not need it where he lives.

He decided to move the desktop to a different location in the house so turned off the computer, disconnected the network cable, left the router where it was, moved the computer and then reconnected the desktop to the router using a longer cable. The incoming cable from the ISP’s aerial was never removed from the router.

When he hooked everything back up there was no connection to the network on the desktop. There is a wireless connection and he can get online but not on the desktop.

He returned the desktop to the original position and hooked the internet cable directly to the computer and had an instant connection to the internet.

He changed the cable but that didn’t help.

I then brought the desktop and router to my office. My internet connection is PPPoE. I connected the feed into the router, hooked up the desktop and had an immediate connection. I then return everything to his home, hooked up everything with the router and it didn’t work.

I have tried different MS fix tools – reset tcp/ip – reset winsock – MS kb’s 50203 and 50267 but still have no connection. I also did a factory reset on the router but no joy.

Any thoughts on what I haven’t got right would be welcomed, thanks

I believe he is trying to connect with UTP Cable. What's the length of the cable ? Is it running parallel to main wires ?

It's a standard network cable about 25 to 30 feet in length.

I have also tried a cable that I have that I know works. There are no parallel wires.

Just to forward my observations while searching for an answer to this. I have read several threads where the same router has caused problems with both wired and wireless connections but nobody seems to have found a solution other than replacing the router with a different make. I can only guess that this particular router is prone to errors or has a very low signal output.

Does the wireless laptop work ok where the wired desktop is situated, in which case it could be worth installing a wireless link in the desktop.

the router was exchanged for a different one but there was no change. What has happened is inexplicable. The following morning the desktop was started up and had full connectivity. Wireless access was successful as well.

No adjustments were made to any equipment in the network.

Any ideas why this would happen?
