    Hi,
My computer was hit with a bad Trojan or other nasty malware problem and I wrote to the Malware Forum and Broni helped me clean the machine. I told him that Idid not have sound, Network for file sharing, and I cannot see my printers that are attached.

He suggested writing to your forum and maybe you can help me.

    1. I don't know where to start with the sound problem. I did go to the sound icon in the right taskbar. The volume mixer shows they are on. I also have an icon there "Realtek HD Audio Manager." I right clicked this and went to Sound Manager and clicked on Windows Media Player and clicked a song and was shocked that the music played. I do not get any sounds when Windows comes on or off.

    2. As far as the printers are concerned, I used to have a wired Brother Laser Printer HL-2140 attached to this desktop and only this computer could see it. I saw in the start menu where the Brother was listed but when I go to print it said no printers attached. I thought I would uninstall the software and pull out my old CD and re-install it, but that didn't work either.

The second printer is a wireless Canon MG5220. I see the Canon listed in the start menu also but my computer cannot see it either.

On my laptop I am able to print to the wireless canon printer.

    3. I tried to turn on Network and Sharing Center and the message said:
The service cannot be started, either because it is disabled or because it has no enabled devices associated with it.

I am sure there are other problems that I haven't found out yet but if you can help me with these I certainly would appreciate it.

    Thank you so much.

    Jean

Hi Jean, Is it the Windows Start tune that you don't hear?
Have you reinstalled the drivers since Broni cleaned up your Malware? Neil.

Go to Control Panel > Sound, select the Sounds tab end make sure the Sound Scheme is set (to Windows Default - or your preference).

Most likely you'll find it empty with nothing selected...

Thanks for the help. I did get my sound back by doing as you suggested. Setting Sound to Windows Default.

I don't know how I got my brother printer back but it is working. Now I have to try to get the wireless Canon working. Do you think I have to re-install the Canon Printer. It said "The printer is offline" Check that the printer cable is connected. And, of course, this is a wireless printer.

I'm really not sure how to install drivers Neil but I'll keep working on it.

I haven't checked the Network yet but will try to see my laptop next and I'll get back with you on my progress.

Look in the Device Manager and see if you have any yellow ? or ! and if your Cannon printer even shows in there. If you have a yellow ? or ! by your Cannon printer, put the CD in for it and then in the Device Manager, tell it to update the driver and point it to the CD.

I did look in the Device Manager, there are no yellow ? or ! marks. There is nothing showing Printers at all even though I was able to print to the brother machine. I was not able to tell it to update the driver because of not being able to see it.

I'm not sure what I should do to get the printers in the Device Manager.

The only thing listed in Imaging Device is my Epson Scanner 1250.

I did download the driver for the Canon from Canon's website and it seemed to install ok.
I then tried to turn on Network and Sharing Center because I figured maybe this is needed before it will see the Wireless Canon. Well when I tried to turn it on I received the following message:

    Network and Sharing Center
The service cannot be started, either because it is disabled or because it has no enabled devices associated with it.

Can you please help me figure this one out.

    Thank you.

Did you look in Printers and Devices in the Control Panel and see if it is listed there? It may be listed there but is not the default device as why you are having this problem.

If it isn't listed there, you may have to install it again. Sounds like you may have to do it anyways if it isn't showing in the Device Manager.

I already did re-install the drivers for the Canon and Brother but they are still not listed in Control Panel. I can print to the wired Brother printer from my Desktop and I can also print to the Wireless Canon from my laptop. But my desktop can not see the Canon Wireless printer.

I think the problem is something to do with the Network and Sharing Center. I tried to turn on File Sharing, Printer sharing and password protected sharing but they remain off.

When I go to Network discovery and turn it on, it always goes back to Custom.

How can I turn on File sharing and printer sharing.

    Thank you.

Hi Jean, In Device Manager > View > Show Hidden Devices.
This should show your Printers > Expand + > Right click on brand you want to check > Properties > Device Status will show whats going on.
While in there, you can Update Drivers.
In Control Panel > Devices and Printers > Right click on Canon Printer > Menu will show and you can click on work online Neil.

I just don't know what to say. I did go to Device Manager > View > Show Hidden Devices.
it does not show any printers, so I can expand and select a printer. In Control Panel, under "Printers" there are my Brother HL-2140 series, Microsoft XPS Document Writ3r Quicken PDF Printer but not the Canon Printer.

I guess I will just have to give up on this although I think the problem is in the Network and Sharing Center.

Maybe something isn't turned on in services.msc but I don't know what it would be.

If you have any other ideas, please pass them on.

Have you been to the Canon web site to get the latest Drivers for the Printer?
HP supply a CD with the Printer and when you run the CD - there is an opportunity to go Online and get the latest Driver Software.
I'd check and see if Canon have a Download available similar to HP. Neil.

Yes, I went to the Canon site earlier but was not able to install the printer driver but this time I was successful and I can now print to the Canon Wireless Printer from my desktop. Thank you for your help. It is interesting though that the printers do not show up in the Device Manager.

Now I am still having a Network problem. I do not see my two laptops in the Network icon. I try to turn on file sharing and I received this message "The RPC server is unavailable. "

If I could get the Network fixed so I can see my two laptops and get the file sharing turned on, I would be go to go.

Do you have any other ideas. Thanks again for your help.

What are you using for a Fire Wall? Try turning it off and see if it works now. Has it ever worked?

I am just using the Windows Firewall. Yes, I was always able to see my laptop through the Newwork and was able to copy files from one computer to another. It doesn't work if I turn the firewall on or off.

I really do believe that it has something to do with the Network and Sharing Center. I cannot change any of the settings:

I wish I could send you a picture of the Network and Sharing Center. Is this possible?

Also I tried to make a restore point or at least see if I have a previous restor point and I got this message:
No restore points have been created on your computer's system disk. To create a restore point open System Protection.

When I opened System Protection I got this message: The restore point could not be created for the following reason: The shadow copy provider had an unexpected error while trying to process the specified operation (0x8004230F).

I'm about ready to give up on this computer.

Do a Print Screen and post it here.

To take a screen capture of the entire screen

    1.
    Press PrtScn.

    2.
Open Paint by clicking the Start button Picture of the Start button, clicking All Programs, clicking Accessories, and then clicking Paint.

    3.
In Paint, on the Home tab, in the Clipboard group, click Paste.

    4.
If you want to resize the image, on the Home tab, in the Image group, click Resize, and enter a new percentage or pixel size.

    5.
Click the Paint button Picture of the Paint button , and then click Save.

It's also possible to capture a specific active window when you press PrtScn.

    To capture an active window
    1.
    Press Alt+PrtScn.

    Notes

On some keyboards, PrtScn might appear as PRTSC, PRTSCN, or a similar abbreviation.

Certain laptops and other mobile devices that lack a PrtScn key might use other key combinations, such as FN+Insert, to capture the screen. Check the manual the came with your laptop or device for specific instructions.

I have tried several times earlier to insert the prt. screen picture into this Message box and nothing happens. Obviously this site does not allow print screen pictures to be inserted here.

Jean, I've just spent the last 2½ hours with my Vista HD. I had installed my HP 2540 Wireless All in One Printer but it would not print a test page.
I had a look in Control Panel > System > and it did not show what Service Pack was installed.
I found that I had to Download and install both Service Pack 1 and Service Pack 2. (This Hard Drive had a fresh install of Vista Business).
Once I had installed both packs - my HP printer now works!!!
I can only suggest you look and see if you have all the Service Packs required and fully installed as something may have happened during your Malware clean up. Neil.

PS. this Post is on the Vista HD.
