    Hi

I've got a peer-to-peer LAN with 4 PCs all using WIN Me on the workgroup LOCAL, which works very well.

I recently added a 5th PC using XP Pro/SP1. I can browse shared folders on the XP PC no problem. The problem comes when I try to access shared folders on the Me PCs from the XP PC. I can do it, but even if I check "Remember my password ", the password is retained for that session only, and has to be reentered if I power off/on the XP PC. With the Me PCs, once the password is saved it never has to be entered again.

Actually it's more complex and stranger than that:

Suppose I access C: and D: on PCMe1 from PCXP - I enter the required passwords and all is OK - for that session. I power off PCXP, then on again, then find I can access D: on PCMe1 but not C: - I have to reenter the password. Then when I try to access D: on PCMe1, I find I have to also enter the password, even though a moment ago I had access without entering the password! This behaviour is wierd but quite consistent.

In the Help under Remembering network passwords I read that one is supposed to be able to get a user/password dialogue which has both a "Remember password" and "Don't ask for this password" again checkbox. I've never seen the latter, and in the user/password dialogues I get, the user is always a default PCMe1/guest type - greyed out so no other user can be entered.

I have done a title search of the XP forum using "password" and nothing quite describes the problem I am having. I see some useful input from moderators and senior members, so I hope they can help me out.

    thanks

You might want to check the services you have enabled. Though I have not tracked down the exact services that were responsible for some of my home network problems, I went through and enabled as automatic any service that might even have a remote affiliation to my network. Strange things, like the common printer being inaccessible, despite messages from the other machines that the print job was completed successfully, went away.

If you are using a software firewall, allow free access from the other computers' IP addresses for all ports and protocols.
